Summaries

  • Comedy movie is about a Punjabi and Gujarati family. and their cultural clash. Gujarati is played by Paresh Rawal and Punjabi Played by Rishi Kapoor.

Synopsis

  • The story is about a Punjabi, Guggi Tandon (Rishi Kapoor) and a Gujarati, Hasmukh Patel (Paresh Rawal). Both families live in Mumbai in a society known as "Mini-Gujarat".

Hasmukh is a self-made typical Gujrati and runs a small grocery store in the Gujju colony in Mumbai. He dreams of owning a super store one day. He is also very protective of his Gujarati culture and heritage. He specially hates Punjabis for their destructive cultural influence. He even stops his daughter Pooja (Payal Ghosh) from pursuing a course in Fashion design as he thinks its opposite to the Indian culture. Hasmukh lives with his mother (Bharati Achrekar) and has an elder daughter Nimisha (Jinal Belani) and son Pankaj (Karanvir Bohra). Pankaj is settled in Canada with his wife and is estranged from his family. Pankaj has sent numerous letters over the years, but Hasmukh has refused to acknowledge them. It is evident that in the name of protecting his daughters, Hasmukh is stifling all their freedom. Hasmukh only wants his daughters to get married into a decent home.

Meanwhile Guggi and son Monty (Vir Das) have recently shifted from Punjab to Mumbai to open a secondhand car dealership. Incidentally, they buy the plot (which is a shop cum house) opposite to Hasmukh's house in the Gujrati colony he lives in. The guy who owned the plot lost a large bet in the IPL and had to sell the plot to square his debts.

Prem (Prem Chopra) is Guggi's father, and Guggi is married to Pummy (Divya Seth). Guggi knows how to enjoy life and to live it to the fullest. They greet anyone and everyone by giving them a big hug. On his first day Guggi sells Hasmukh's old car for Rs 2 Lakhs without telling him. And then only gives him Rs 1 Lakhs as cost of the car. Hasmukh makes Guggi share the profit in the ratio of 51:49, with Rs 51,000 going to Hasmukh.

Hasmukh finds Monty telling Pooja to disregard her father's wishes and to study fashion design. Guggi invites the entire society for a party at his house. The party has drinks, skimpy clad waitress serving liquor, loud music, non-veg food and so on. Hasmukh takes offense to this and rallies his entire colony to ban loud music, liquor, non-veg food and foreign channels from all society colony houses. No TV after 11 pm as well. Meanwhile Monty hooks up Pooja with an internet connection (without Hasmukh's knowledge) to provide her some freedom. Monty starts loving Pooja and begs his dad Guggi to make amends with Hasmukh. Guggi reaches out to Hasmukh one day and Hasmukh shares with him that he was saving up to start a Super Store at the same plot where Guggi has erected his garage.

The tension between the 2 houses continues. Hasmukh cuts the water supply to the Guggi house, forcing Pummy to bring all the dirty clothes to Hasmukh's house for washing. Hasmukh also reports Guggi to the municipality for running an illegal used car sales business from his plot in a residential society. Guggi tries his best to befriend Hasmukh and takes him to a massage parlor as well for a relaxing day, but that doesn't work either.

However, things go south when Guggi and family attend the engagement of Hasmukh's elder daughter Nimisha and convince him to conduct an item song from a professional dancer. The Tandon's all enjoy the party, but the Patel's are deeply offended. Kantibhai (Tiku Talsania), Hasmukh's would be in-laws, cancel the engagement and storm off. Kantibhai is a super conservative Gujarati as he runs 4 cow sheds back in Gujarat. Hasmukh throws the Tandon's out of his house and declares his hatred for all Punjabis.

Mrs. Tandon declares that no one in the house will drink liquor again till Nimisha is engaged again. Guggi goes personally to meet Kantibhai and declares that Hasmukh cares so much about girls that he was going to open 2 girl's schools in Kantibhai's village for Rs 50 Lakhs. Pooja is also angry at Monty and her dad for the troubles in their family. Monty and Guggi encourage Hasmukh to go on KBC to win money to pay for the schools. Monty helps train Hasmukh for the same. Hasmukh wins the Rs 50 Lakhs on the show after using Guggi's help as "Phone a Friend", who unknowingly gives him the right answer.

Monty uses this occasion to ask for Pooja's hand in marriage, but Hasmukh refuses. He tells Guggi that his own son, married a Punjabi girl and settled in Canada forever. Guggi decides to leave the society as he doesn't want both the kids to see each other and be sad. He also gives the keys to his house to Hasmukh and asks him to open his super store there. Before leaving Guggi re-unites Hasmukh's long lost son Pankaj with him, and Hasmukh is ever in Guggi's debt for uniting his family. Hasmukh gives his consent to Pooja and Monty's wedding.
