The assassination of President Abraham Lincoln shatters any hope of a smooth post-war recovery for the people of New York City and the United States at large. Detective Kevin Corcoran is on the move, evading retaliation from Tammany Hall fixer, William "Wild Bill" Eustace (William "Billy" Baldwin), working to remain hidden while seeing through events he set in motion.

Eustace mentions that Captain Sullivan was about to reach his 30-year service mark.
The show is set in 1865. There was no New York police department until the municipal police department was formed in 1845. Even then, Sullivan works for the Metropolitan Police, formed in 1857, a separate (and concurrent) entity from the municipal police. See more
