1.36: Mi America está aquí by Elaine Romero: The choppy delivery keeps the viewer on the surface
Editor Gilman doesn't usually have a great deal to do in these films, since mostly they are delivered in one take, or with minimal editing. Here he gets to put on a good show since the film seems to consist of mostly takes of a few seconds up to fifteen seconds, all edited together to make a whole. This style is not my preferred one for these monologues, since I think it takes away from the flow from the writer and the performer – who really should be the only people you notice in these shorts. This 36th film in the series sort of confirms that for me, because it really is fragments pieced together that doesn't work as well as it may have done as whole.
The sense of a people as a group and as one family is pretty good in the writing, but the performance doesn't seem to flow. Instead of being a person talking, it feels like an edited together collection of sincere statements and declarations – much like a commercial in some ways. This is a shame because I think that Romero's script is better than that but it is limited by what appears to be the manner of shooting and thus the way it feels pieced back together again. It does still have a bit about it, but the fragmented and choppy delivery stopped me getting beyond the overarching idea.
