- Hannah Swensen has been asked to teach a baking class at the college in town, but her equipment is tampered with causing an explosion that the fire department rules an accident. Soon, a colleague ends up dead and Hannah begins to put together the puzzle of the mysterious circumstances surrounding the murder. Hannah leans on her friends and family to collect the breadcrumbs of foul play and put them together, and meets a different side of law and order when Lake Eden's prosecuting attorney Chad Norton (Webster) enters her life.
- Hannah is adjusting to new situations: dealing with Delores' latest passion, something Delores would never have contemplated until only recently in having discovered a dead body and investigated the murder along with her daughters, and that Delores has parlayed into a new career; teaching a cooking class at the community college, something that she and most of her students find an equally enjoyable experience; and agreeing with Mike to pause their relationship indefinitely as he has accepted a job with the FBI in Quantico. In her newfound single status, Hannah cannot see that other men are interested in her romantically, including Norman, who Delores is still pushing on her despite he still officially being in a relationship with Diana, and her community college colleague, divorced and newly transplanted English Professor Bradford Ramsey, with who she is planning some joint classes on food in English literature. Within this situation, Hannah is almost injured or killed when an explosion occurs in the college kitchen during one of her classes, it seemingly done on purpose, and subsequently she discovering yet another murdered dead body of someone she knows from the college. With Mike no longer there, Lonny Murphy, promoted to detective, leads his first murder investigation. Regardless, Hannah still cannot help but insert herself in the investigation, which does not seemingly sit well with the county's new public prosecutor, Chad Norton, who Hannah, in previously having met, describes unflatteringly as "by the books". With what little evidence is initially available, Hannah, with Delores, Michelle, Andrea and Norman by her side as sounding boards, has a long list of possible suspects. With many of those suspects attached to the college, the investigation becomes a time sensitive one as the semester is near its end with many of those suspects able to pick up and leave forever at semester's end.—Huggo
