Much like Mermaids: The Body Found (2011), scientists and ordinary viewers criticized the special for attempting to present fiction as a documentary. Michael Sorenson, executive producer of Shark Week, responded by saying that Discovery aired three disclaimers, including one that said "none of the institutions or agencies that appear in the film are affiliated with it in any way, nor have approved its contents."
