The series has been retooled, and it has lost its magic

Warning: Spoilers
Miles from Tomorrowland was a great show. It was a fun outer space romp about the Callistos, a family who lived and worked together in outer space for the Tomorrowland Transportation Authority (TTA), a governmental organization akin to the Federation in Star Trek. The family consists of Captain Phoebe Callisto, mother and commander of their ship, the Stellosphere; Leo Callisto, father and ship's pilot/engineer; older sister and resident brain Loretta Callisto, and finally the titular character, Miles.

Part of what made the show great was that the family dynamic of the series was routed in reality. Miles is an ordinary kid. He loves to play video games, ride his blastboard (hoverboard) and play with his best friend Merc (a robotic pet ostrich). Like all kids, he makes mistakes. He clashes with his sister (although they generally get along well), he "accidentally" makes messes and breaks things, he tries to get out of chores. You know, normal kid stuff. But he's good-hearted, loyal, and does his best to try to help when he can.

Of course, as normal a kid as Miles is, he does live on a spaceship, which leads to plenty of adventures. Miles, despite being the main character, doesn't always save the day. The family always comes together to solve any problem or overcome any challenge. The family was always at the core of each story. There is the occasional villain, but often they are on missions of discovery, rescue or even diplomacy. Woven throughout is the mysterious Builders, an ancient and highly advanced race of peace-loving aliens who left cryptic and mysterious clues about themselves across the galaxy.

The stories were exciting, engaging and even occasionally educational. It was the kind of show where you didn't mind watching with your kid because you enjoyed it too.

Fast forward to season three. Miles and his sister are both entering the TTA academy, which makes no sense because Loretta is like two years older than Miles and at least five years ahead of him educationally. The siblings are joined with their friends Blodger Blopp, Mirandos, and Haruna Kitumba. While on a training mission they manage to save a runaway starship from crashing into a colony. As such, the TTA decides that these prepubescent tweens should form Mission Force One- the TTA's first line of defense against the heretofore unheard of Nemesystems- a nefarious agency determined to steal all of the tech in the universe.

Miles is given command of their new ship, and each team member is given a new color-coded spacesuit and a new specialized skill. (In other words, they look like the Power Rangers.) The parents are gone, and these unsupervised children are left to their own devices in the TTA's most advanced starship.

They've completely changed everything that made the first two seasons so great. Miles isn't the ordinary kid he used to be. He's a infallible super-captain who always saves the day. The family dynamic is gone; Loretta always seems to follow his lead without having any opinions of her own. They've turned a great family adventure show and turned it into a hollow action movie of a Disney show. Maybe they can turn it around, but I doubt it.

An amazing kids' show, and a pretty great sci-fi show, period.

My 3-year-old daughter and I discovered "Miles from Tomorrowland" towards the end of its first season, and it has become a huge favorite in our household. The production values are incredibly high, it's educational without being pedantic, the CGI space effects are gorgeous--even the musical score is pretty amazing. It's a perfect example of a show that's made with kids in mind, yet doesn't talk down to them. I don't know that I've ever seen an animated children's show operating at quite this level.

The show is about a futuristic family traveling the galaxy on behalf of the Tomorrowland Transit Authority, whose mission is to "connect the galaxy." One of the things I appreciate about it is that there are healthy role models for everyone in the family. Phoebe, the mom, is the ship's captain, with the best mission success record in the TTA; Leo, the dad, is the ship's engineer, highly respected in his field; Loretta, the older sister, is a computer coding genius; and Miles, the younger brother, contributes to the family's missions with his creativity and enthusiasm. The family's robot ostrich, Merc, provides comic relief. It's very much an ensemble show, and the main characters display a healthy family dynamic. In addition, the family's interactions with other alien races model how to relate to others who are different from us.

I also love the show's optimistic view of the future, something that's sorely missing in science fiction in general these days. It captures something of the spirit of "Star Trek" in this sense, with a view of a future where humanity has overcome its basic social problems and is starting to expand out into the galaxy. Also like "Star Trek," the show has a good mix of real-world science and technology alongside more speculative things like faster-than-light travel. The stories are simple (it is a kids' show, after all) but well-constructed, and cover some cool sci-fi concepts; there have even been a couple of season-long story arcs. Recurring characters voiced by the likes of Mark Hamill, Bill Nye, Jonathan Frakes, Wil Wheaton, and Whoopi Goldberg are a fun addition for parents as well.

My daughter loves the show, and I think I enjoy it almost as much as she does. If you're a sci-fi fan, this is the perfect show to watch with your kids!

Potential out the window

The reason I loved Miles from Tomorrowland for my child and I was because of the awesome Callisto family. Their dynamic was amazing to watch. To see a strong family unit, working and living together and being close knit was really heartwarming to see. The other plus was that Captain Callisto was a woman, captaining a ship in space. What a positive message!! Now the show is a generic show with a bunch of pre pubescent tweens in charge of saving the galaxy. It just doesn't make sense. I wish the old show would come back because this new version is pretty blah.

Spectacularly Special Space Series That's Anything But Spaced-Out Or Spacey For The Most Part.
Dawalk-130 April 2020
Before I came across this show by reading a little about one of the characters on the Disney fandom site, I think I might had already known about this for some time, somehow or for some other reason, despite never catching it on Disney Junior when it was running, I'm just not that sure. But from what I read about this show itself, it ignited enough of my curiosity and interest in wanting to check it out on Kiss Cartoon and here's yet another show I don't regret seeing. I'm working on a list of my top 20 favorite animated T.V. series of the 2010s and this is among them. I must say, this is one of the better/best T.V. cartoons of the last decade. Not only that, but also one of the more underrated toons it seems, as this doesn't get brought up much, as that's evident from the few reviews there are on here and Common Sense Media currently. Additionally, it's since become amongst my favorite space/sci-fi shows, educational shows, and CGI shows. One of the smartest and most impressive in recent years that proves that, despite some clunkers in the Disney Channel/Disney Junior's repertoire, the studio is still quite capable of coming up with some great, strong, newer material. Programs of this caliber are what restore my faith in cartoons and verify that there's so much more to them than the stereotypes. I can say without doubt and hesitation that this is one of those that are worth watching and enjoying as much as an adult as I would if I were still a kid. Just a few late nights/early mornings ago, I binge-watched four episodes (eight segments) of the first season back-to-back as a mini marathon and I'm almost done and on my way to viewing the second. One of the best things Walt Disney Television Animation has ever done, I can't praise this enough.

The original title is a nice, clever nod to the Disneyland attraction, even if the reference is somewhat indirect and the show doesn't exactly revolve around that. One of the reviewers before me already explained the premise of this and I think the explanation is better than how I can explain it. I'll make mine shorter and make some notable points about it differently. Rather than focusing on Tomorrowland, the Disneyland attraction, it's really about a family of four, futuristic Earthlings, The Callistos, and their pet robotic ostrich, Merc, who are members of an organization or agency called Tomorrowland Transit Authority (TTA) and they have adventures traveling around the galaxy to various other planets, basically helping out others in need. In addition to the educational values about the solar system, the plots of the episodes often find the family and/or some others getting into a jam and a solution to the predicament needs to be found. So amid the positive aspects about this are the emphases on problem-solving and teamwork. Just when one may think everything there is to discover in space has been discovered, there's always something new up there and out there for one to find, and see.

From all that I've seen so far, I can't complain much about this. High-quality CGI art/animation, superbly written stories, many likable to lovable characters, well-composed music, the regular/recurring/guest voice actors, all great in their roles, everything about it is just about flawless. That is, up until the third season, according to a couple, other reviewers on here. Under the title of Mission Force One, the other commentators claim that's when the series began to decline. I haven't gotten to see the third season yet, but I'm kind of hesitant and wary to see that when I do, because of whatever content there is in that ruining the image and memories of the previous seasons. But I'll still check that out too eventually, anyway, despite the claim that it's not quite as great as the first two seasons. Although I haven't seen it yet, I presume the third has the son, Miles, his sister, Loretta, and their crew of two alien friends, Blodger and Mirandos Ariellian, along with fellow human, Haruna Kitumba, become more of the focus rather than he, his sister, and their parents as they continue their aspirations to be space explorers. From the complaints I briefly read about Mission Force One here, it seems like it that couldn't and wouldn't have been as bad probably if it were treated more as a spin-off rather than an extension or continuation of Miles From Tomorrowland. The crew behind this and whoever came up with that idea might had been better off doing it that way instead and keep the original format as it was. For this reason, I give it one less star than I would've were it not for the decline in quality later.

Regardless of whatever problems there may be with the third and last season, I say this is still worth giving it a go anyway. It hasn't been a disappointment to me from what I've seen to date and it's miles or lightyears ahead of Ready, Jet, Go. The factoids are always good to learn about and know. But this one that Disney has done it again. One of the most entertaining I've ever seen. Recommended.
