The Beast Crosses the Atlantic!
atlasmb11 August 2013
Remember when Brooke Burns hosted Dog Eat Dog? It was one of many contest shows where they tried to drag things out for dramatic effect. The Chase does a little of that, but, for the most part, the pace is speedy, due mostly to the timed rounds of questioning.

The Chase pits a 3-person team of strangers against The Beast aka Mark Labbett, a tested and proved British quiz expert.

First, each team member must independently answer questions in a timed round, accumulating money, and then defend his winnings by simultaneously answering multiple choice questions, hoping he gets more right than The Beast does. These rounds are handicapped, but The Beast can sometimes overcome the deficits. Failure to avoid The Beast in this chase results in elimination.

The contestants remaining after the eliminations join forces against The Beast to defend their accumulated monies. First, they must jointly answer as many questions as possible within a 2-minute time period. Then The Beast tries to answer more questions within a 2-minute period. The teams gets a lead of 3 questions if 3 team members survived the elimination rounds (2 if only two survived, etc.)

Part of what makes the game stimulating are the graphic depictions of "the chase" showing The Beast's marker trying to run down the markers of the contestants.

The questions asked are neither too difficult nor too easy. As I said, most of the gameplay has a brisk pace. And Brooke interjects encouraging comments and evaluations of the game's progress without slowing the pace too much.

The most welcome surprise was that The Beast, though a tough competitor, is not all business. He has a personality and a playful sense of humor. The previews gave me the impression that facing him would be like facing a stone-faced man without much personality.

Note that it is conceivably possible for one member of the 3-person team to do 90% of the work only to get 1/3 of the final winnings. But in my opinion, that is no worse than Jeopardy!'s format, which often allows a weaker player to beat a much superior player by virtue of the single-question Final Jeopardy round.

I will definitely continue watching The Chase (on GSN).

Unfair rules
gwennierowe25 February 2022
I love watching the chase and my favouritechaser has to be Mark. On the whole I think it is a great game show. However there is one thing that always bugs me and which I think is really unfair. This is in the final chase. The contestants get 2 minutes to answer questions and so does the chaser. However if the contestants get one wrong, or they pass, Bradley reads out the answer before moving on, thereby cutting into their 2 minutes. This doesn't happen with the Chasers because if they get one wrong the clock is stopped and the contestants get their opportunity to push the chaser back. If they get the question wrong Bradley reads out the answer before the clock is restarted for the chaser. This in my view is unfair and could make the difference between the contestants or the chaser winning. This may seem trivial but it could add up to one or two more questions in the 2 minutes allowed.

Great but needs changes
mkatieirwin28 March 2017
This is my favorite show except for the sometimes crude way of taking the questions. Alex Trebek on Jepardy would never stand for this. It is inappropriate especially for this kind of show and certainly not necessary.

Also, Brook is great and has a great figure but again, for this type of show, why does she sometimes wear skirts so very short??

I hope the show will continue but with attention to these matters.

An underrated classic
mwesolowski-5809025 January 2021
This is about as great as a quiz show can get, frankly. It has a fully realized concept of the "David vs Goliath" and plays into it with its set design, sounds, music, etc. Brook Burns is a fantastic host as well, having a ton of personality and great interaction with Mark Labbett, as well as being able to read the questions clearly at a rapid pace for the timed rounds. And of course, The Beast is phenomenal, being legitimately intimidating and providing a great challenge to the team. Of course, the game itself is awesome well, with a fantastic pace, an appropriate cash prize and perfect level of difficulty. Obviously things are harder for the chaser than the team, but it has to be: even as is, only 25% of teams win. All in all, a great gameshow that I think is an underrated classic.

My Take on The Chase
moose-1482121 March 2015
In my personal opinion, "The Chase" is the best trivia show since "Jeopardy!". Why do I say that? Because the pace is just right, the money is nothing to sneeze at (especially when there's a Super Offer), and it's an all-around fun show to watch and play along with. Plus, Brooke and The Beast can make it funny, I learn things I might not have picked up otherwise, and social media keeps the production staff in touch with the fan base. I enjoy seeing daily trivia questions online, in addition to the ones in the show. I get those correct most of the time too! However, I do have some constructive criticism as well. First, there really should be some kind of name announcement other than the podium lighting up, because with no announcement, I've seen several instances where the wrong person answered and therefore Brooke was unable to accept. Second, I think there could be a way to get the audience to participate as well, such as taking a poll on selected questions. Other than that, keep up the good work, Game Show Network!

i really enjoy this show

Warning: Spoilers
*Minor Spoilers* I remember seeing previews of this show when it originally aired in the U.S. around '12,'13 on FOX I believe. I wasn't interested at all, just thought it was a cheesy game show. But I enjoy the quality of the questions, they're just challenging enough for reasonably educated folks but there's definitely a great deal of facts to be learned from it. The issues I have with it r pretty small minus a few things: 1) Sometimes having Brooke say correct/incorrect and giving the correct answers takes up time 2)They tried too hard to make some of the questions raunchier or "funnier" than necessary. But all in all I do enjoy this show enough to where I set a reminder everyday it comes on. HOWEVER there's one episode in particular I have a huge issue with. Aren't there like screening procedures that take place to ensure contestants have enough intelligence to give The Beast a good run?? Season 1, episode 2 featured Moly, (Mensa member who never heard of amethyst, what Obama's oldest daughter's name was, nor the newspaper Woodward & Bernstein wrote for SERIOUSLY) Christian, (said JFK was buried next to Marilyn Monroe WTF) and Aaron (basically said nothing during the final chase). These 3 r LITERALLY the worst game show contestants I've ever seen.

They had a 3 step head start, yet reached 7 steps, 3 people could only answer 4 questions in 2 minutes??? I understand the lights and cameras make people nervous but this was ABYSMAL; just proves Mensa membership and high degrees don't make ya smarter always... P.s. I was also surprised the Beast didn't know it was a James Cameron movie with the line "I'm king of the world" nor that baby blue jewelry boxes came from Tiffany and Co.

Pros: The host; The Beast and so on Cons: The "suspense" of whether the contestants got the answers right/wrong is obvious

Great Show
mailbill-jones10 January 2021
I never saw this when it was first on TV, but became a fan on Game Show Network. This is certainly far better than the recent ABC remake! Brooke and the Beast are both missing from the remake and the remake is a flop!

Warning: Spoilers
If it's not available to watch. This is the most bizarrely marketed shows I think I've ever seen. I watched this series a few years ago but can't remember where. When I heard there would be a remake I decided to see if was still available. N carries two seasons only. The wiki says there were 51 episodes but where are they to watch. I'll pay, i'll pay, but can't find it anywhere even though according to the wiki this was one of the most highly rated shows for GSN. Yes, my favorite part was brooke burns but she was actually very good on this show. Maybe they scripted it, I don't know but she seemed not to miss a beat in managing the show and 'the beast'. Sorely disappointed that ab(whatever) is not bringing her back. I don't know who her agent is but she's way over talented for the kinds of movies and tv shows she's been on. This game show proves she's not just a pretty face.

A true trivia game!
beaconb2 July 2020
A former Baywatch babe hosting a game show, what's not to love! :) All the Brits bashing this show, I guess, is like people always bashing remakes of original TV shows or movies. I'm surprised how many people don't take the higher offers from the Beast, because most would seem to have been able to bank it. Beating the Beast in the final chase is another thing altogether though, because it's not multiple choice then! I've been watching the re-runs on Game Show Network; I never saw it when it was originally aired. I suggest ignoring the bad reviews here and watch it, then make up your own mind.

FALSE ANSWERS otherwise good
theuglybarbarian14 March 2019
On an episode I just watched the question was: What observance commemorates the day slavery ended in the United States? The correct answer in the show was Juneteenth, as opposed to Freedom Day (Beast's Guess) and Bloomsday. The problems are double, firstly that Freedom Day and Juneteenth are the same day of celebration. The second is that the day of celebration named by those two names are the commemoration of the day slavery ended in TEXAS, not the United States, which I knew when I saw the answer Juneteenth because the 13th amendment, the one that removed Slavery Nationwide, was ratified in December 1985... not June.

I LOVE the show, but QAQC needs to be done on ALL questions, BEFORE they are used in the show...

I am the smartest man in the multiverse, but if you offer me enough money, I might take the job of Quality Assurance Researcher for questions to be used on the show... this seems like it would be creating a job, because if someone else is doing it then the above question wouldn't have been an issue, that or you need to fire the person doing it.

Great show otherwise.

For US Eyes Only
tjhyb15 November 2014
A typically, and horribly, OTT version of the more sedate British original. The audience hysterics apart, what really irks me about this inexplicable Challenge import is the way Mark Labbett is constantly referred to as "The Beast". That is simply a nickname given to him by British host Bradley Walsh in the same way Ann Hegarty became "Frosty Knickers" (can't imagine the Yanks going along with that!). His proper title is "The Chaser". The clue is in the title of the show for goodness sake. All well and good for an American audience, but why on Earth buy it back to show to a British audience that has had the benefit of seeing the original? One other annoyance is the fact that most of the questions are understandably American-orientated. Is it fair to expect Mark Labbett to be as knowledgeable about American issues as the American contestants? How would an American Chaser get on being asked questions like "The Oval is the home ground of which county cricket club?" or "Who was Foreign Secretary at the time of the Falklands War?"? Not fair to The Chaser.

Diabolical
peterj3113 October 2014
We've just watched the US version of the Chase, that started with series one today; I'm aware that it has already run three seasons in the US.

The show was absolutely awful and a shocking adaptation of the UK original. Mark Labett should be ashamed for demeaning himself by appearing on that. The whole theme was completely over the top, with the contestants so bad I'd have preferred to have my teeth pulled than continue watching it.

One of the contestants allegedly had a PhD in maths, and felt the need to remind Mark Labett at one point; he clearly had self esteem issues. He performed a little dance to indicate how he, as an alleged maths "professor", teaches his students how to remember the "quadratic formula." I was left wondering what university requires such a "professor" to teach their students to remember such an elementary formula. Where did he purchase his PhD?

I can honestly say that it was probably the worst gameshow I have ever seen, and I will not watch it again; I cannot get that time back.

You look at the host in the UK they have Bradley Walsh as host which seems to bond everything together, but this woman is absolutely characterless and with a plastic personality,

The chase is on across the pond
studioAT11 April 2015
I'm a little torn when writing this review.

On the one hand Mark was always my favourite chaser on the UK edition of the show so to see him in every episode of this US version is a plus.

However, what can't be denied is that the show has been made larger than life and annoying for US audiences. There is a simplicity to the UK version that at 5pm sort of works. I also missed Bradley Walsh giggling at every silly question that comes up.

So, there we go. The Chase hits the USA and as ever when this happens, things get lost in translation. Ironically this version often airs at the same time as the British version, so if Mark's your favourite and he's not on the UK one, you don't have to look far to find him.

Wonder if anyone can win money in this game show?
vanessathieu2 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I watched this show a lot of times. So far, I haven't seen anyone winning any money from this show. I wonder if the Beast already knows all the questions/answers? If that's the case, nobody can beat him because they don't know all the questions/answers. And if they can not beat him, then nobody can win any money from this show???? The contestants tried hard to win the money, but at the end, nobody can beat the beast. This show is the most boring and unfair game I've ever watched

SLOW PACED AND BORING
dredmart15 January 2021
My rating for this show is based on the new version released in Jan 2021. It is boring. I don't like the host and the show really drags. Jeopardy has 61 questions in a half hour. I am guessing this one hour show has fewer questions in the first 55 minutes - the action picks up in the last 5 minutes, if you can manage to hang around. Don't recommend for trivia fans.

Pitiful
teke-984972 August 2023
It's really a shame that the contestants make it to the final round and then leave with absolutely nothing if the Chaser beats them. Most game shows will give a consolation prize of some kind. Would it hurt to give them at least $1000? I feel this is very unfair and frankly, unsportsmanlike. The show is cleverly designed, but the "experts" have lots of experience built on a wealth of knowledge, it's true, and are used to going against the clock. The contestants are at a disadvantage, although they may be knowledgeable, they are likely nervous and it is hard to think when one is nervous. I don't understand why anyone would want to be on the show just to get beat up!!
