While it may be just another bit of intentional absurdity, the moon, in fact, does not have a 'dark' side. it does rotate and has day and night; these are perceived from earth as the phases of the moon. the lunar day is equal to the lunar month so while it goes thru its phases, it always presents the same side to the earth. what is meant by the 'dark' side is the side away from earth or the 'far' side, nods to Gary Larson.

In Bulwer-Lytton's novel Vril is the power and Vril-Ya is the people utilizing it. The film flips the relationship and refers to the power as Vril-Ya.

Clearly the small, dilapidated, empty transport ship couldn't sustain the Moon base population for the 80 year journey to Mars when they had already noted that the large base had barely enough food and supplies to keep people alive.
