Romance stories at their best ensure that the audience fall in love with the characters as much as the characters do with each other. If there isn't something appealing about one or both, then there isn't a need to see them succeed as a couple. The most skilled creators understand this. Suu Morishita is the pen name of a duo whose works include “Shortcake Cake” and “Like a Butterfly” that whilst maybe not the most well-known, enjoy much critical acclaim. “A Sign of Affection” (2024) is their current work, published in noted Shojo manga magazine Dessert, and their biggest hit yet with several award nominations and high ranks in opinion polls as well as a stage musical. The anime adaptation by Ajia-do Animation Works aired this year and is exactly what I would classify as the best kind of romance with characters you can't help but enjoy spending time with.

The love story between Yuki and Itsuomi unfolding in A Sign of Affection was one of the sweetest and most delightful stories to follow in the past winter season. During last night's airing of Brazilian broadcast channel Rede TV's program Leitura Dinâmica , a special segment was featured highlighting the Brazilian dubbing team's work on the anime. In the series, Yuki is a deaf woman navigating the challenges of college life, and when it came to choosing the person to voice the character, Brazilian dubbing director Luísa Horta explained that Dubrasil studio wanted to cast someone who shared similar experiences to portray the character. And this is how they found the brilliant Beatriz Oliveira , who is an oral deaf actress, and as we can see, she was the perfect choice for the role. This was her very first role in the voice acting industry! Yuki's voice actress, Beatriz Oliveira , highlights the...

Watching shojo anime is my Roman Empire, my raison d'etre. As someone who prefers to be in the audience rather than a participant in romantic relationships, gushing over fictional couples is my way of experiencing love. I’ve been an avid fan who has consumed shojo from the late ‘90s to now. Though it’s had its ups and downs over the years, shojo has been seeing a renaissance recently, which means more couples for me to cheer on. As one does for the fictional characters they love, here are my favorite shojo anime couples who made it official. Spoilers ahead so read at your own discretion! Yuki and Itsuomi – A Sign of Affection I’ve never felt more butterflies in my stomach for a fictional couple than Yuki and Itsuomi from A Sign of Affection . They’re, dare I say, the perfect match — a boy who loves to travel...

Shojo anime don’t always get the same visibility as shonen, so when studios announced reboots of beloved classics like Kimi ni Todoke: From Me to You and long-overdue adaptations of popular shojo manga like A Sign of Affection , shojo fans like myself no longer felt like we were inside an echo chamber. Lately, it feels like the industry is finally acknowledging the demand for women-targeted content. Seeing an influx of shojo anime adapted from newer manga and light novels in the last year has been a treat. We’re already off to a strong start in 2024 with A Sign of Affection and The Demon Prince of Momochi House , so witnessing what’s been dubbed in the community as “The Shojo Renaissance” fills me with excitement for what else may follow after these shows’ success. As we celebrate our wins, we should look back at the beginning and understand why...
