An engrossing horror short
mtrburrows25 January 2024
Other than a couple of small technical problems (which is to be expected in these low budget indie projects), The Foreboding: Fractured is an extremely solid short that manages to accomplish a surprising amount with its short run time.

Never has a horror short had me this invested in the characters before. The charming cast bring to life the more human, comedic scenes with this group through some really solid chemistry and lively physical performances. It never felt like the script was relying on archetypes or cliches, instead it feels like you're following a genuine group of uni students.

It makes the horror scenes all the more tense once they do kick in, and that paired with the direction and score makes you feel invested in every step of this narrative. If anything, I left the film wishing it was longer, as the atmosphere of the experience is a very compelling one. Very excited to see what this crew do next.

When they say all movie stars started as 'unknown' actors, believe them. With a script balancing comedy, mystery and drama, the actors deliver an edge-sitting yet natural performance from the very first frame. The lines are delivered with such natural and precise tones at the same time that you wonder if they did not just roll a hidden camera on them. For a low budget short film you would expect anything, expect a professional and almost Hollywood-like result. The production, the shots and the soundtrack are also immaculate but it is the acting and the script that stand out the most and make it completely worth it to watch.

Each character has their personality well defined and easy to catch on from the very beginning, but they all catch you by surprise with all the plot twists that happen along the storyline. The film permits the audience to take a glimpse into each of their personal stories, eventually finding their way together into an adventure they will never forget. It is the type of movie that you can watch ten times and you will always find a hidden detail that you had not noticed before.

Directed by Kemal Yildirim, the actors Alexander Stauton-Hill, Peter Tilley, Olivia Bennett, Eve Kathryn Oliver and Sienna Shih deliver performances of a lifetime and set a solid entrance to a brighter future in the entertainment industry.

I went into this film with no expectations and I left with my love for cinema rejuvenated. The acting was superb and i absolutely loved the costume design. Starting off light hearted, the twists in the story leave the audience hungering the plot to delve even deeper into it's thrilling climax.

Gripping from start to finish and the atmosphere was brimming with tension. Incredible shots combined with a beautifully written script made this short film finish all too quickly!

There's so much this film achieved, and I personally cant wait for what's next to come! Thank you for bringing this project to life! It was a pleasure to watch.
