Harlots, Housewives & Heroines: At Home
The first episode of this three part series saw the gorgeous Lucy Worsley painting a picture of the ladies of court; in this second episode she abandons her expensive dresses for Puritan dress, housewife's garb and even a scold's bridle. She also visits some splendid houses where women of slightly higher station lived, including the lady author Hannah Woolley and the twice married Elizabeth Dysart, mother of eleven and, says Dr Worsley, a great survivor.
We learn a few things most people won't know: in spite of their prudishness, the Puritans were enthusiastic about sex within marriage; and then there is the little matter of the sham marriage industry that sprung up around Fleet Street.
The earlier witchcraft hysteria gets a mention, as do midwives, and the invention of forceps. These were exciting times for a certain type of woman, but not alas for those of humble station.
