Harlots, Housewives & Heroines: At Court
Who better to present a documentary series about women in the 17th Century for girls than the gorgeous and talented Lucy Worsley? This first episode starts at the top of society. Although his Dad lost his head, literally, Charles II took the restored monarchy in his stride, and over the course of his life had no fewer than thirteen mistresses. In 1662 he married Catharine of Braganza, whose influence persists to this day as she is the person credited with introducing the custom of tea drinking to England. Other women of this era were noted for achievements that related to their own talents rather than to their habits, but the bulk of this programme concerns the women at the Court of Charles II and in his bed.
In her usual breezy fashion with her myriad costume changes and assisted by sundry academics, Lucy Worsley brings that court to life. If you thought the Swinging Sixties meant the 1960s, she says, think again. And if you thought women achieved a measure of political power only with the advent of second wave feminism, boy, were you wrong.
