Joyce Wieland was the first wife of infamous experimental filmmaking legend Michael Snow. While not nearly as prolific as he was, over the course of her career as an artist Wieland, on occasion, would make some of her own short films, oftentimes in collaboration with other filmmakers. Many of them were quite insignificant compared to the work of her husband, making her a less-recognized figure in independent filmmaking, but a few of them are at least somewhat interesting to view today even despite their basic structure.
"Sailboat" is just a little documentation Wieland probably caught when at a beach someplace, and as such not much of an experimental film. It consists of a single long shot of a lake or sea, with six different sailboats (there's more than one, why wasn't it titled "Sailboats"?) passing before the camera. At least that's what it looks like at first; if you look closely you can see that it's actually the camera moving since the boats are taking their time. Superimposed over this all is the title, oddly enough not reserved for its own title card but displayed during the entire film. Not an especially excellent short film and really just more a brief documentary or home movie than an experimental work.
