For lovers of sci-fi mysteries
kattkoerte-51-44926012 July 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Reality TV or not, Dark Secrets provides the thrill and chill that lovers of the Twilight Zone, Arthur C. Clarke, Beyond Belief, Weird or What, and Beyond Bizarre would enjoy. The thrill exists behind the idea that the stories could be at least partially based on real events. The voice over of the shows only main character (The Teller) helps add to the eerie feel in each episode. Should you choose to pick it apart based on its "found footage", photo documentation, or samples, the show will lose its appeal to you. It is geared towards those who entertain the notion that there are unseen, undiscovered, and mysterious things abound in this world. Take the shows key character, The Teller. He is a story teller, should you choose to see it that way. The effort taken in the production of this show exceeds that of other more recent "reality TV" shows related to sci-fi and cryptozoology. Take it for what it is and allow yourself to be entertained. If the show continued, I would watch future episodes, so long as they did not change their format too much, the cast is reasonable, and utilize the same actor to do the voice of The Teller.

Reviewers give me a break

Warning: Spoilers
This show is a great concept that seems to be getting beat up everywhere I turn. There are plenty of shows out there that stick to complete realism. (I hope you read that last bit with the intended air quotes.) This show should be approached as a modern reinterpretation of the early sci-fi series such as Outer Limits or Twilight Zone. Each episode has very little if anything to do with the other except the narrator and intro. Each week you get a new fantastic story or "moster of the week" that in my opinion would make for great feature length movie if told as a traditional horror or science fiction story. The narrated investigation angle is just the plot device used to shoehorn all of these great ideas into a single series. Most likely this is just due to the popularity of that format on channels such as Investigation Discovery. Are all of the ideas or episodes in this series great? No. But then again The Twilight Zone had some stinkers as well. The first and second episode could be easily developed into movies that I for one would love to go see. I think if you go into the series with this mindset your enjoyment of it will be greatly increased. I honestly believe that the bad reviews are from people who were somehow fooled into thinking the stories were real and are angry about it and have to trash what they didn't fully understand. Please, don't be one of those people the world has plenty of them already.

Don't be fooled.

Warning: Spoilers
My low rating on this is probably due to the fact I started watching it on Netflix where it is listed as Investigative T.V. and in with documentaries. While well crafted I suspected it was a huge fake out in episode one. By Episode two I knew it was. Vietnam Vets do not look younger than me. And the under developed brain of an absorbed twin is not going to take a person over. It was like the writer of that episode watched too much Venture Brothers. I could accept this show as fiction and find it amusing and entertaining, but there are no disclaimers that it is fiction and I think that is lying and cheating its audience. Unless the point is to prove that the average person is more gullible than we normally thing the masses already are. Or maybe I should just be happy that my suspicions starting with episode one prove I'm smarter than the masses.

Warning: Spoilers
When I was a boy I watched a show about a reporter no one believed. I hear the show inspired a lot of folks Chris Carter included. Dark Secrets was gone too soon. There are maybe one or two silly episodes out of eight, but the rest are Golden. The intro is enough to hook you into the series. I would have liked to seen an end. I wish I could find this on BlueRay or Digital. I wish I had DVRed them when I had the chance. Anyway, that silly show I watched when I was five pushed me into the business I'm in now. The view from the skeptic, the wondering if the whole thing is BS. It's a masterwork! Mr. Kolchak would be pleased.

Absolutely fake
mobilegames80816 August 2014
Warning: Spoilers
If you think this series is truthful at all, watch episode 4 of season one : the monster of matagalpa. The claimed actual photos of the monster(which is obviously a man), are all different. It's like a find the difference photo game. There are two photos where a large gash on the monsters lower stomach magically switch from his left side to his right. Not to mention these so called official photos of the monster match all of the video clips the show plays. Could it be that the show took pictures of the monster at the same time they filmed all these terrific actors? The only dark secret in my opinion is that it is all fake.

The only thing they missed is a good director of photography
tanatar-3486525 May 2015
This is a remarkably refreshing take on the good old X-Files genre, a series without a beginning, without an end, and, fortunately, without any bigger plot. The writer who did the episodes did a pretty decent job, although some dialogues are rather artificial and are not completely in character for people who read them - I'm not sure if that's the fault of actors or the fault of the writer.

The one bad thing about the series is that the director of photography did a very poor job. The picture is rather awful, and is very reminiscent of bad TV productions 2-3 decades ago, even though the lighting is good, the props are good, and the actors actually are quite decent. I turn it on Netflix and treat it as a radio play.

Horribly Fabricated Series
melinar5122 June 2014
Warning: Spoilers
If you like a little truth in your investigative series, then I suggest you give Dark Secrets a pass. They use names that can easily be searched only to find it's a fabrication. The places and people simply do not exist outside the script of Dark Secrets. The performances of the "eye witnesses" are very rarely convincing. There are even blatant holes in the scripting. At one point the narrator mentions seeing some photographic evidence and then 10 minutes later explains that all photographic evidence had been destroyed years before. Glaring holes in the stories are not uncommon in the tales spun in the Dark Secrets series. If you're simply looking for some creepy stories for a bit of entertainment, then this might fit the bill.If monster hunting is your thing, I suggest Destination Truth for a bit more realism.

Biggest Waste of Time
mnaples14 March 2015
To anyone who thinks this show is worth watching you are so wrong I don't know why you would even bother writing a review. The stories and back-story to the show would only be interesting if they were remotely accurate. However since they decided to throw facts out the window with this show you might as well pull up Youtube and search for all the crazy garbage about alien ancestors that are fighting a interstellar war for our natural resources. This terrible show could have been created by 5 year old's for all the useless and frankly untrue "ghost stories" they throw into it. And since I need to talk about it for ten lines at least I'll just say that it is not worth your time.

Great show wish there were more.

Warning: Spoilers
So I'm an old and bitter writer who loved watching this crazy show in the seventies about a reporter who no one believed. That silly little show put me on the path to enjoying fiction. This is the best modern version I've come across. Saddly, like most television I enjoy (bitter...remember?) it only lasted eight episodes, although like all good things it can still be watched on certain sites. (If anyone has information on where I could buy a hard copy of the series I'd be in your debt.) I'm also amazed at the number of on-line folks who seem to hate it because it seems too real...

I always thought that was the hallmark of good storytelling!
