The Salvation Army hostel take in a new young resident, but Lt. Mary Barker (Carol Leader) suspects that he may be illiterate. Meanwhile Major Gibbs' son Bramwell wants to play for a local county football team in the hope that he will be selected for a senior team, but the Sunday match day clashes with his father's plans to have a visiting Commissioner inaugurate him into the Army's brass band. Bramwell decides to honour his father's wishes but finds to his delight that the Commissioner's visit has been delayed, allowing him to play his Sunday football game.
