Why did this get cancelled after just two seasons?
nancylmarine3 January 2020
I discovered this on Hulu when I was just flipping around not too long ago.

That this is improvised is the real cherry on top of this ice cream sundae of a show.

So many running gags! I love it!

I realize people who watch television and movies for the sole purpose of critiquing them and sharing their pretention with the rest of the world will hate this show, but this isn't a show for the Sundance Festival. It's for entertainment purposes only.

Another reviewer mentioned Blazing Saddles and this show really does remind me of the Mel Brooks movies, with their dead pan humor and innuendo.

And I also realize the "woke" crowd are going to come on here to tell us all how offended we should be, too.

This isn't a show to help us be better, stronger, more loving people. It's an improvised comedy show. Period. If it didn't offend me, I wouldn't want to watch it.

I gotta say, as great as the undertaker is, the deputy gives me so much to laugh about.

It's too bad Hulu didn't give this a chance to catch on. It's actually a pretty funny show.

This was canceled but Bobs Burgers lives.
berg-7453214 June 2020
This has been happening a lot over the last couple years. I stumble on to a show that might still be on the air that I love and that sinking feeling begins is it still being made. This was a crushing blow. How with 8000 streaming channels with more everyday and the fact that past tv shows that were canceled are getting new life how does this not have a spot somewhere. My first thought and the one that makes the most sense is period shows like this being set in the old west are more expensive. The other thing that could happening is that calling it a improvised tv show with only an outline of the story maybe scared people off. I was completely unaware of that aspect of this show and I really can't notice it. These are very talented people with quick minds. It's really sad this is no longer being made and I can't imagine a Family Guy scenario since that revival was based on dvd sales and I don't believe those are made any longer. If you have Hulu watch this show its so good.

Hilarious and fun. Worth your time.
thechris_14 March 2020
I've watched it thru twice. Once a few years ago then rediscovered it. I can't believe that Lehr (Hoyle) isn't doing more things. Very funny. As a matter of fact, saw this before Deadpool was even a possibility and thought that this guy could play him under a mask. Maybe not the physical stuff, but the quirky nature he has. He'd be the sort of talent I'd like to make a movie/show with lol.

Wanda and the mortician/medical examiner were perfect supporting characters. Not anyone I didn't like in the show.

Also, that Honey dance in season 2......... wow.

Fistful of Curb
joeband9919 August 2013
No idea what to expect from this, but definitely enjoyably weird.

Basically it's the humour of Curb, Spinal Tap et al transplanted to the Old West. The set up has an Ichibod Crane feel to it, urban educated sheriff brings his city ideas to the backwards west, but it really works. All the cast play it nicely, lots of sharp, deadpan lines, with the undertaker (Bob Clendenin) especially good.

The whole thing has an almost homemade quality to it, which is great. It doesn't feel like anyone tried to get them to soften the edges and it's all the better for it.

Amidst all the bland stuff out there I do hope it lasts.

Why didn't Hulu promote this show?!?!
lusciousmuffins24 December 2018
I found this on Hulu while just clicking around. While most of what Hulu produces is dark and depressing, this was laugh out loud hilarious. I was devastated to learn it was only two seasons total and completed perplexed as to why it was never promoted and cancelled so quickly. This was a series that could have really drawn a lot of people to Hulu and kept them coming back, if only they'd known it existed.

Unscripted hilarity
colleenmann222 October 2013
I can't get enough of Sheriff Hoyle and his crew of misfit characters.

John Lehr and Nancy Hower have created truly funny show that brings you back to the days of Waiting for Guffman and Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Anything can happen and there's a surprise around every corner.

John Lehr's wit and timing keeps you laughing all the way through. In fact it takes more than one viewing to catch them all, they go by so fast. The whole cast riff of each other with equal abandon and have successfully created quirky characters in equally quirky situations. What comes out of there mouths is crazy and sublime. It's fun and witty and fresh all at the same time. A definite must watch.

Hilarious 1875 Western (Kansas) Comedy
darricklin27 May 2018
This is one of the funniest shows I have ever seen in my entire life! (I was literally bursting out with laughter several times each & every episode),

This hilarious 1875 Western (Kansas) comedy also has a good/solid narrative underneath all the slap-stick, raw humor as well as talented actors & actresses.

While it does not have a content rating, I would say 17+ years of age is a safe bet.

True Hidden Gem

As good as it gets. Pure comedy gold. Best "sitcom" ever. Too good for public consumption so it got cancelled after basically 1 season. That's how it goes. Shows with laugh tracks go on endlessly but genius like this gets cancelled. Keep watching The Voice and drinking beer America. Frickin dolts.

Awesome Idea, Awkward Execution
intriguement20 September 2013
I decided to watch "Quick Draw" after seeing the trailer on Hulu. The concept is hilarious: a frontier town has a new sheriff, but his only law-enforcement experience comes from his Harvard criminology degree. The show name-drops some well-known Wild West legends, and all the typical Western tropes reappear in a new, quirky guise.

Unfortunately, the show fails to live up to its potential. First, while the trailer focuses on smart, "Office"-esque lines, the actual show relies more on goofiness and innuendo. Still funny, but not quite what I was expecting.

Second, in a tightly-scripted comedy, every line has a job. Some lines provide big laughs while others are only mildly amusing, but EVERY line plays a role in advancing the plot and making people laugh. The same goes for well-done improvisation like "This is Spinal Tap." In contrast, "Quick Draw" has a lot of throwaway time when characters either pause or repeat the same joke while thinking of what to say next. The laughs are widely spaced. And, because the dialogue advances the plot so slowly, not all that much happens.

Finally, a lot of the action takes place at a bordello. It was funny in the first episode or two. After that, I realized that the show has NO female characters who aren't whores. It has no male characters who aren't johns. I know the whole bordello thing is done for laughs, but eight episodes' worth of sexist laughs is too much. Similarly, in S1E6,"Nicodemus," the show's only black female characters, in their only scenes, talk about nothing but sex. These women talk much more coarsely and explicitly than the (white) whores ever do. Sexist AND racist: Check.

To sum up, "Quick Draw" isn't a bad way to kill some time on slow afternoons. But I doubt I would watch these episodes a second time.

Way funnier than most sitcoms out there!
atlantatrapeze16 May 2018
Quick Draw is a refreshing oasis of humor in an overly scripted and strained world of sitcoms that are either trying to hard, or not trying at all, but simply rehashing the same overused formulas that were funny at first but have grown repetitive.

Quick Draw jumps out of the gate with exceptional chemistry between the cast members, who are all improvising their lines in every scene! You can tell how much they enjoy their roles by the extent to which they truly delve in their characters and bring them to life. Improv acting takes infinitely more talent than reading off a script, and it shows in the results of this fantastic series.

Trust me, you'll love this show as much as I do. You'll be glad you gave it a shot!

Which
Headturner120 June 2022
Is a really good rating for me. I was scrolling forever and looked at my watch list and clicked on everything I hadn't watched and this is the only one I continued with until I fell asleep. It's rare to like all the characters and I do except the sheriff gets annoying sometimes with the "Harvard" thing. Overall it's a pretty funny entertaining show and the cast have great chemistry.

For the life of me, I still can't figure out why this was so highly rated. I love off the wall comedy but this was just plain stupid. I really tried to like it.

I found this show to be hilarious. The main character Is super funny and witty. It is a super funny concept and one could only that this is how it was back in the day. The little drinking game you can play while the show is genius. Finally someone makes a truly comical western TV show. I was a really big fan of there previous show 10 Items or less. Bob Clendenin is super comical as the undertaker. His comedy is subtle yet absolutely hilarious. I have been waiting for them to come out with a new show. Nancy and John Lehr have done it again. I had a blast watching this season and can only hope for another. My fingers are crossed.

Funny and Original
Just_My_Two_Bits25 February 2019
This was an unexpectedly good show, it's too bad it only lasted a couple seasons, if it would've been produced today I'd bet it would've gone much longer. It's a western comedy, kind of along the lines of a Blazing Saddles, but it doesn't go that overboard and revolves more around the day to day lives of the townspeople. The sheriff (John Lehr) absolutely carries the shows and there are laugh out loud moments and situations throughout most episodes, mostly based around just how different the people and norms were back in that time. If you're looking for something new to watch and you're in the mood for a less than wholesome (not appropriate for children), unique style comedy, I'd give this one a chance for sure.

It never fails!
jrsix21 June 2022
Somehow a show this great with so much going for it gets cancelled after 2 seasons yet ridiculously horrible shows like 2 Broke Girls and Mom were running strong. Not to mention shows like Greys Anatomy which has been puttering along for an extra 15 seasons after the last season it was actually good. It's a shame, the brilliant acting and wit make what should be a top show yet it really never was even given a chance.

Found this gem while scrolling through Hulu and I'm glad that I did. Sad that it only lasted two seasons though. If you haven't seen it, I'd definitely recommend it

Excellent Series
MissTCShore11 November 2013
Quickdraw is a great new original series from Hulu. The show is not an "authentic" western in any sense. It is a contemporary comedy set in the "Old West" of Great Bend, Kansas. If you like "The Office," you should like Quickdraw, as well. It has a similar feel of improvisational comedy (although The Office wasn't improvisational, it certainly had that feel to it). The comedy is quite funny, although it contains humor that may be inappropriate for younger viewers.

Casting for the main characters is fantastic. The show stars John Lehr as Sheriff John Hoyle. Lehr reminds me a lot of Jason Bateman in Arrested Development. He is a Harvard graduate who has taken the job of Sheriff in the small town of Great Bend, Kansas. He is like a fish out of water, as the saying goes. His character is very "book smart" but without a lot of "street smarts."

Nick Brown plays his deputy, Eli Brocias. As of the first few episodes, this character hasn't been fleshed out very well. What we do know about him is that he seems to want to have nothing really to do with enforcing the law. Apparently, being a deputy only pays the bills. He tries to avoid criminals and arresting anyone as much as possible.

Allison Dunbar plays a bartender and prostitute. She is something of a love interest for Hoyle.

Bob Clendenin plays the town undertaker, Vernon Shank.

A brief word to the reviewer who stated that "the Kansas scenery is realistic." Uh, no, it isn't. I actually live in Great Bend, Kansas, the supposed location of this fictional series. Great Bend is located in one of the flattest areas of Kansas. There are no mountains within a three day ride by horse, let alone in the background of the town. In fact, if you had stood in the center of Great Bend when the town was just getting started, you would not have been able to see a hill, either. The sagebrush is wrong for this area. The rocks used in the series are wrong for this area. Nothing about the scenery fits the real Great Bend, Kansas. However, that doesn't distract from this charming show. It still has an "Old West" look and feel to it, even if it doesn't match reality.

7 years later ...
welambert0130 May 2020
The show still holds up. This show and Spy are the reason I subscribed to HULU. The improvisation rank up there with Second City and Reno 911. Smart, witty and hilarious. John Lehr a fan since 10 Items or Less. Allison Dunbar her homage to True Lies is brilliant. Why only 2 years? You will be asking the same question.

Awesome show, great cast!
daniellepriser2 February 2015
This show is funny, silly, and everything goofy- and it's 95% Improv! YES!!! After speaking to one of the stars (John Lehr) who also writes on the show, he told us that a great majority of the show's lines are unscripted! How talented, then, is this great cast if most of it is just made up! I will watch and rewatch this show for years to come- and you do not have to watch the episodes in order to know what is going on. It's HULU Quickdraw weekend on The Ignorance Equation: Friday at 8pm eastern is Deputy Eli Brocias (Nick Brown), then Sunday at 1pm eastern is Sheriff John Henry Hoyle himself, (John Lehr).

some actually liked this????? Hulu original
braquecubism21 November 2019
I can not tell you how really awful I thought this was- obviously improvised. they can't get any comedy writers- and it's like a subgroup of amateurs at the Groundlings- awkward, unfunny I know comedy is personal, and is hard- but are these 10s, are these shills?

Incredible and Hilarious
danachilton21 September 2014
Hands down, one of the funniest comedies on TV. Watching Quickdraw is like watching a great improv show. The cast members do an excellent job playing off each other; the script is witty, the jokes can be subtle and smart or in-your-face slapstick and silly. The show knows its audience and eagerly plays with the boundaries of adult humor set for a show not on HBO. The show takes on what could be difficult political and social issues and makes them hilarious regardless of where you are on the political spectrum. What other show on TV can successfully pull off discussing the dilemma of 'crotch rot' and the issue of women's suffrage in the same episode? Race, sexual orientation, women's rights, religion and sexual liberation are common show topics and Quickdraw deals with them all beautifully. The show is a modern classic in the making and a new reason to look forward to Thursdays.

Ummm, more please !

Lemme break it down for you left-brained folks out there. It is a comedy western. 2 genres in one ! I love improvisational comedy a la curb your enthusiasm, and QD is just as funny. John Lehr is really funny, and I give major props to all those involved with the series. I am a huge fan of Netflix and Hulu for their caliber of programming. It's almost as if they think their viewers are more intelligent and would appreciate quality programming. I binge- watched all the episodes, and paid for it by showing up sleepy-eyed to work the next day. What else can I say ? Watching this show will make you happier than you have ever been in your entire life !

Best Hulu original and one of the best comedies.
vinny-078673 June 2019
I watched this by chance several years ago and it has stuck with me ever since. The comedy is spectacular and much of it is adlibbed which gives a great natural fluidity to dialogue and plot. The plot itself is engrossing; each episode has its own distinct plot while each season has an overarching story arc. Never a bad idea to watch or to show somebody else. Like the other reviewer I am disappointed that more effort wasnt given to promoting this show as i think it is the strongest hulu original ever, in any genre. When i was deciding between a netflix and hulu account, i picked hulu because of this show. Give it a watch

Hate it was cancelled
liannabrams10 June 2020
The first episode of this show, I thought it was the stupidest thing I'd ever seen. By the second episode I was totally into it, and my husband and I could not stop laughing. We found ourselves quoting lines and rewatching favorite episodes, which we NEVER do! Seems like no one ever heard about this show. The dueling scene remains our all time favorite.
