Great song, great video
A most energic and enthusiastic song from the early 2000's that has a special place in my heart not just because of itself and John
Mayer's performance but above that comes the reflective music video it got, something that seem to speak huge volumes with its intelligent
and highly reflective concept.
Mayer performs the song on a street as a crowd keeps passing by him without noticing that he's the one singing. What's going on, where are they going and why the crowd gets bigger by the minute? They're following the sound that he's doing except that comes from a towering pile of speakers put together to which all the men and women feel liberated by the music and voice that comes from it, almost like a religious experience and those speakers impeach them to move on. Only a pretty woman notices Mayer at a given moment.
One can reach various interpretations on those visuals. My take is a notion that the artist as a visual idea or ideal concept can be ignored or at least it's not that important (musically speaking, obviously) as long as the sound he's creating, the sonorous experience is great, heartfelt and express something. I like when Mayer walks out of his corner and joins the crowd yet still gets ignored by the crowd.
They just look at the speakers and keep on dancing and moving as if being part of a great concert.
That idea is a little contradictory since music for the past 50 years had become more visual with the creation of music videos - forget about live performances. And this very video selling the idea that only the audio is all that matters isn't all that valid since many music had bigger impact on people's lives because seeing can also attract rather than just listening.
Anyway, whatever the take you have, just watch it because it is a great song and the video is really well made in countless ways. 9/10.
