The perfect episode
tbzrzpyxy28 October 2023
"Shoresy" has been an exhilarating journey from its inception, and the last episode proved to be a masterpiece in character development and storytelling. The poignant scene where Shoresy shares a rare moment with his family over dinner not only solidified the show's emotional depth but also provided a crucial insight into Shoresy's multifaceted persona. The depth of character building in this episode was remarkable, peeling back layers of Shoresy's tough exterior to reveal vulnerability and genuine human connection.

The scriptwriting deserves commendation for its balance between humor and profound moments, striking a perfect chord that resonates with the audience. It wasn't just about Shoresy's sarcastic wit or his signature on-ice banter but delved deeper, showing the complexities of his relationships and personal struggles. The nuanced performances by the actors added another layer of authenticity, making the characters come alive and enabling the viewers to relate to their experiences.

Additionally, the episode's pacing was commendable, navigating smoothly through poignant family moments to the grit and intensity of the hockey scenes, maintaining a captivating rhythm that held the audience's attention. The cinematography further elevated the storytelling, capturing the essence of each scene with a remarkable visual finesse.

What truly sets this episode apart is its ability to humanize Shoresy, a character previously known for his brashness and one-liners. The dinner scene with his family exposed a more vulnerable side, emphasizing his struggles, aspirations, and the conflicts between his personal and professional life. This intricate exploration added depth to the character, fostering a deeper connection between the audience and Shoresy.

In conclusion, the last episode of "Shoresy" not only solidified the show as a fan favorite but also served as a testament to the power of character-driven storytelling. It's a testament to the writers, directors, and the entire cast and crew for delivering a near-perfect episode that resonates with viewers on an emotional and relatable level, marking it as a pinnacle in the series' journey.

good episode with a bad scene

In what was otherwise a satisfying ending to another fantastic season of this show, there is a scene where Shoresy sits down with his family that made me pretty uncomfortable. I have watched all of Letterkenny multiple times, as well as this spinoff show, and while Jared Keeso doesn't come off as a dyed-in-the-wool progressive he's not exactly conservative either (see the ending to Hard Right Jay). So, including a scene where the conversation randomly steers towards "guys in women's clothes," which is not challenged or argued with in any significant way by the chief characters, came off as the writers being intentionally hurtful and bigoted.

I see the 10/10 review here which argues that this scene humanizes Shoresy and builds his character. I honestly thought the opposite. Shoresy has gone from a faceless one-liner factory in Letterkenny, to a sensitive soul deeply caring of his team and teammates. Season 1 and most of season 2 have that recurring theme of Care; of building a team from the ground up and putting in the work till it pays off. The show takes a lot of that good will and throws it in the garbage during this scene in the season finale. Shoresy suddenly reverts back to his horrible self from several seasons of Letterkenny ago, just for a few lines, and then in the next scene he's supposedly back to his good humanized self again.

Whatever the writers were trying to do here, whatever message they were trying to convey, it missed the mark. I'm inclined to give Keeso benefit of the doubt based on his other work, but if this trend continues in later episodes, that will become difficult to defend.

Early 2000s-style Transphobia
cozymissjosie28 October 2023
An otherwise good episode was jarringly segmented by a casually transphobic scene, reminiscent of 90s-00s bigotry punchlines. The scene was completely unnecessary and had no relevance to the rest of the plot. "Girl was actually a dude" is no longer an acceptable avenue to a cheap laugh, and I'm shocked that, after Letterkenny's folksy-supportive themes, the spin-off would include such a tone-deaf and blatantly bigoted scene. It left me with a foul taste in my mouth and made it difficult to feel invested in the emotionally charged second half of the episode. I'm very disappointed in the writers and I don't know if I'll continue to watch season 3.
