TEXAS
Miles walks out of a shed with his hand and face covered in blood. He sets the structure on fire. We see him enter a heavily guarded community, walking past and ignoring Aaron. Miles heads towards a house where inside Rachel is working as a doctor's aide to her father Gene. They treat a patient who was hit by one of the missiles.
Tom and Jason are showing Julia's picture around what looks like an enormous refugee camp.
Gene works on the huge cut on Miles' hand, which he said happened while slicing an apple. She leaves the room and Gene talks to Miles about Rachel's history of choosing bad men. Gene makes reference to them having an affair while she was married to Miles' brother and tells him he's the last thing Rachel needs right now.
The next morning Jeff and Charlie make small talk. She says she has no family. They both have Monroe Militia brands on their wrists and Jeff says he recently saw Monroe. She asks "which way did he go?"
While doing work Rachel flashes back to Flynn's death. She's obsessing over what he was up to and Gene tells her to stop. He dismisses Flynn as a "wackjob," but Rachel wonders if perhaps he was following orders. Cut to the White House.
Miles prepares to leave and Rachel suggests he could stay, "a little longer." He points out that bad things happen when they're together.
SIX MONTHS AGO
Miles brings Charlie, Rachel and Aaron to see Gene, saying he didn't know where else to go. Rachel says "It's my fault, Dad. The bombs."
In present day Miles watches several men grab some people by a barn. He rushes to help and ends up killing one of the attackers.
Charlie goes to visit "New Vegas," which has a low-budget carnival atmosphere. She watches Monroe compete in (and win) a bare-knuckle boxing match.
Aaron is upset that one of his students has contracted polio. He goes outside to get firewood and spots hundreds of nano machines in the air. The next day he tells Rachel what he saw. He asks about the "insane" things that have happened to them since the night the bombs dropped.
Miles tells the sheriff the man he killed he from a war clan, down from the Plains Nation. He thinks they are in big trouble, that everybody will be slaughtered if they don't get help. It seems Miles will stick around for awhile.
Tom seems to be considering suicide, having come to the realization Julia would have been killed by one of the bombs. Jason talks him out it. The two of them see a large ship arrive.
FOUR MONTHS AGO
Charlie wants to leave and Miles tries to talk her out of it. It doesn't work, she needs to be away from Rachel.
In present day Charlie follows Monroe at a casino. A man tells her Monroe's name is Jimmy and he's been there for a few weeks. She pays him some money to arrange a meeting.
Miles and Rachel talk about Charlie. He assures her that Charlie will eventually "find her way home."
The man Charlie spoke with gets Monroe out of his tent. Charlie is watching from afar with bow drawn. At the last minute another man knocks Monroe down and puts him on a horse-drawn cart.
A U.S. government rep addresses the camp where Tom and Jason are staying. She says they have proof that Monroe launched the missiles and the president is making his way to the White House. She asks them all to join the government, saying "we want this country to be great again."
Men break into Aaron's home and grab his girlfriend. He fights back but is slashed across the chest. Rachel and Miles run to his side and call for Gene. As Rachel works to save his life Miles fights off the invaders. A new group arrives and knocks out the sheriff. Gene arrives at Aaron's side just as he dies.
Tom shaves, appearing ready to return to the fight. He thinks there is conspiracy afoot, that the people blaming Monroe for using weapons are probably the ones actually behind the bombings. He blames them for Julia's death and plans to "rip them apart."
Miles and the sheriff are brought the war clan's head quarters are introduced to their leader, Titus.
