While throwing up the Confederate chaplain says that he's puking because he has "a bug." Germ theory was very much in its infancy in the medical community in the mid 1800s, and it is not at all likely that a country minister, or in this case a criminal posing as one, would have any idea that sickness could be caused by "a bug."
