Reno, Nevada, June 12, 2006: The city of Reno, Nevada erupted into chaos after a public figure, Judge Chuck Weller was shot twice in his chest by an unknown sniper inside the Reno Municipal Courthouse. On the same day, a second crime occurred when Charla Mack, age 39, was stabbed to death across town while conducting business with her estranged husband, Darren Roy Mack. The two crimes were seemingly unrelated, but law enforcement investigators had a feeling that the crimes were connected to one another, and they were correct. The investigation moved fast and on June 22, 2006, Darren Mack, age 45, was arrested in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Miraculously, Judge Weller survived the shooting. The connection between the crimes was uncovered by the detectives. Darren Mack and Charla Mack had been going through a bitter, acrimonious divorce, and Judge Weller was the Family Court official presiding over the divorce case. Darren Mack took a plea deal and pleaded guilty to both the murder of Charla Mack and the attempted murder of Judge Weller. On February 6, 2008, he was sentenced to life in prison, with the possibility of parole after serving a minimum of 36 years in prison. Judge Chuck Weller appeared on this program and shared his amazing story of survival.
