Desperate to Be a Mom
lavatch26 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This movie has the dubious honor of pulling off the most rare of triple plays: infanticide, matricide, and suicide, all committed by a single character!

A delusional and violence-prone Taylor Thompson may have accidentally smothered her baby Abbie. But her rage continued in murdering her boyfriend. After the fertility center cut her a check for $8,000 for an egg donation, Taylor has spent ten years in prison thinking about her next move on the chessboard of life.

As soon as she is released, Taylor makes a beeline for little Ruby, the daughter of Melissa and Caleb Nelson, who were the recipients of Taylor's egg donation. Impersonating the nanny named Kimberly Barrington, Taylor worms her way into the lives of the Nelsons.

There was an occasional clever tongue-in-cheek moment, as Taylor's grandiose plan to become the next Mrs. Caleb Nelson begins to unravel. Unfortunately, Taylor's savvy mother, who realizes that her daughter's decade in prison did not rehabilitate her, becomes a casualty, as well as Melissa's boss Jamal, who was close to exposing Taylor as a fraud.

The cast is worthy of praise in making some of the most the outrageous scenes credible. In the end, however, "Nanny Dearest" offered no redeeming values. From the outset, Melissa Nelson recognized something suspicious about Taylor, yet did not follow up on her good instincts. It was also sad to witness the depraved Taylor, who had a sharp intellect and plenty of charm, fall on her sword like a noble stoic Roman. She was just too desperate to be a mom.

Terribly good.

I wouldn't claim this movie to be fantastic, and it most definitely will never be considered a classic... However, I did I enjoy it. Yes, the acting was hilarious. It wasn't dull though, and for that, I was able to enjoy the plot. It reminds me of a film that would have been broadcasted at 3am, on public television, prior to the Internet providing alternative options for me to watch. It was rather nostalgic to endure this amazingly awful film in the early hours of the morning. I'm hesitant to recommend this film to anybody, though I know a portion of society would enjoy this film, as did I.

To summarise my review... Awful acting, okay plot, amazing nostalgia.

Don't waste an hour and a half of your time watching this. I actually made this account just to write this review. The acting was so bad I thought I was watching a Dhar Mann video. The story line is so incredibly stupid, like a child wrote it. The "nanny" apparently believes killing everyone she has a problem with will solve everything. Also, apparently police are just not a thing in this movie. It's just common to break a ton of laws, act out in the strangest of ways (in public) - like just starting a trash can fire in broad daylight in a crowded park to cause a "distraction." -and not a single person notice. Instead of calling cops, there's just ignorant over-reactions that lead to more really really bad acting.

Ugh.

Just after I got done praising Lifetime for finally having a good movie (The Man with My Husband's Face) in 2023, they come out with this stinker. I can honestly say it is the first Lifetime movie my wife and I have ever shut off in the middle. It was pure crap and life is short.

The acting was pitiful and the story line was, well, even more pitiful. The mother (not the biological mother- the other one) was so over the top with her actions and reactions (can you say over-emote?) And the crappy opening with the boyfriend falling asleep on top of the baby, killing her, and then burying her in the back yard?!? C'mon, could we come up with something with a little bit of believability??

Don't waste your time with this crap- I'm glad we had the good sense to shut it off before we lost too much time.

A perfect guilty pleasure

If you like classic, sometimes cheesy, always dramatic Lifetime movies... then Nanny Dearest is for you x10!

The writing keeps us guessing, even when we think we know where the plot is going. So many of the lines are laugh out loud funny (intentional or not)

Acting is fresh and raw by all. The cast of Liz, Kayleigh, CJ all bring their A-game. Introducing "Newcomer" Ireland Lily in her movie debut, as the happy but naive daughter Ruby. Ireland's smile and presence light up the screen in every scene she appears. We will be seeing more of her for years I predict.

In the end, Nanny Dearest delivers on its promise to be 2 hrs of escapism. Thumbs Up!

This was a total disaster and seriously awful. So this couple who can't have children because Melissa is barren, buy a donated egg and have a daughter. Melissa is a newly promoted regional manager for a hotel chain and she has to travel a lot with her work. Her boss Jamal is a bit of a player and she has to travel with him. Caleb the husband is a script writer for children's tv programs who is currently struggling to sell a script. Unbeknownst to them the donor is a psycho who goes to prison for 10 years for killing her boyfriend.

Ten years later she is released from prison and with the help of a former inmate who's computer savvy tracks down the family. Through an orchestrated incident psycho worms her way into the family and becomes their daughter's nanny.

Caleb is jealous of Jamal, because the way Melissa acts around him, all bubbly, flustered and flushed etc. On her return from her trip Caleb confronts her about Jamal and she denies anything is going on between them.

The stupidness of the movie is if Caleb is unemployed and is working from home (writing scripts or whatever) I highly doubt it would kill him to take care of their daughter since she is ten years old and is not baby. So having a nanny seemed pointless to me.

The worst actors were Caleb and the daughter. I like Liz Fenning, and have seen her in a few Lifetime movies and she's not bad. There are worse actresses than her.

Anyway this was a terrible movie. The plot unrealistic and most parts very predictable. Only watch this as a last resort.
