Muromi-san

Warning: Spoilers
This anime series is centred on Takuro Mokojima, a schoolboy who likes to spend his time fishing from the local dock and the eponymous Muromi-san; a mermaid he hooks one day. Over the course of the series we meet more of her friends; including other mermaids and a Yeti and learn that while they may appear to be a similar age to Takuro they are in fact older… much older! Over the course of thirteen twelve minute episodes they get into various scrapes and adventures and Takuro is surprisingly nonchalant about meeting various supposedly mythical creatures; in fact most of the time he wishes they'd leave him alone so he could enjoy his fishing.

When I saw the description for this series I suspected it might be somewhat like 'Squid Girl', which I really enjoyed, as it turned out it is quite different. The humour is more slapstick and there is a fair amount of content that isn't really aimed at children; most notable anything involving Muromi's huge-breasted friend Fuji-san! It is still very funny though and the twelve minute format means it never outstays its welcome; it is just a pity that there weren't a few more episodes… hopefully it will be successful enough to warrant a second series.
