- Georgiana's former love Otis appears in London to offer her his support regardless of the trial's outcome. Though Georgiana wins, she realizes her social standing has changed, and decides she has better protection by continuing her courtship arrangement with Lord Montrose. At Mr. Colbourne's shooting party, Lydia Montrose finds she shares interests with Mr. Colbourne. Edward's attempts to ask permission to court Augusta are rejected by her uncle. Tom agrees to the seaside hotel site when he learns of the potential profit, but infuriates Mary when she learns he chose money over people's homes. Mr. Colbourne confesses his love to Charlotte, but she refuses him because she won't break her promise to marry Ralph.

There her dignity and liberty are questioned in view of her missing, apparently re-sold mother's never-emancipated status, and her father's sanity when he wrote the testament, but lord chancellor Cornforth grudgingly has to rule against Charles Lockhart's claim to the colonial Lambe fortune after the key witness is discredited. Senior brother hosts a celebratory hunting party, widely attended, where he coldly forbids Sir Edward to court his niece Augusta, who suggested the move, while Charlotte refuses his own love declaration in favor of her arranged fiance. Rowleigh Pryce rekindles his friendship with lady Denham and convinces Tom Parker the prominent position for the hotel allows quintuple profit, but wife Mary still openly disapproves of depriving fishermen of their homes.
