The film's subject, Jean-Yves Ollivier, had seen the destruction of civil war first hand in his native Algeria and was determined that the same fate would not befall South Africa.
Some of the border war footage was unearthed in the former South African Defence Force's buried archives. Much of it had never been publicly aired.
Co-director Carlos Agulló had previously been an assistant editor for Alejandro Amenábar on his film The Sea Inside (2004).
