Although the 3-ring ring binders was patented in November of 1886 by a German inventer, it was not used for photo albums until the mid-20th century. In most cases, photo albums in the early 20th century would have been black matte construction paper bound together on one side in the album cover, holding the photos in by glue or picture corner holders, as tape wasn't invented until the 1930s.
