Ray is given the alias "Gilles de Rais" and the title of "Child-Murderer". Gilles de Rais was a knight and lord from Brittany, Anjou, and Poitou; a leader in the French army; and a companion-in-arms of Joan of Arc. He is best known for his reputation and later conviction as a confessed serial killer of children.
Archer mentions that he has had fine dining experience as a former restaurant owner, and Cyril points out it was only a burger joint. H. Jon Benjamin, who voices Archer, concurrently voices Bob Belcher on Bob's Burgers (2011). This season began with a crossover wherein Archer worked at Bob's Burgers, believing himself to be Bob while in a fugue state.
When told that eggplants and aubergines are the same thing, Archer asks, "Where does auberge fit in?" Lana replies in French "In nowhere, imbecile, because an inn is a small hotel!" Auberge is an inn in French.
In the beginning, after sipping from the espresso, Casteau starts the sentence with "What else?" before continuing to speak. This is a reference to the iconic commercial of George Clooney after drinking Nespresso - "What else?"
The abrasive chef's persona is based on Gordon Ramsay, and the in-show show is based on his show Hell's Kitchen (2005).
