Adolf Hitler's prewar finances are well documented through German tax records. Although he presented himself as a man of humble means, in truth he amassed a fortune through the sale of his book, articles, interviews and some speculate photographs and misdirected party contributions. He failed to pay taxes on most of this income. Considering he was head of state of one of the most powerful nations in the world he spent much of his time at leisure and conducted business at any of a few luxurious homes he acquired. Although frustrated as a painter he retained his love of art amassing a collection of 7,000 objects most of which he purchased but others cost of the owners their lives. He was also generous to his favored cohorts giving them lavish gifts for their support.
