- Dexter tracks down Zach, concerned that he may have murdered an innocent person. Meanwhile, Dexter tries to help Hannah escape the country.
- Dexter receives instructions to attend the latest murder scene that just happens to be in his apartment building. Upon arrival he sees that the victim is Cassie Jollenston, his pretty next-door neighbor and good friend of his nanny Jamie Batista, Lieutenant Angel Batista's sister. When examining the body, he notes that the cause of death was bludgeoning in a fashion similar to Norma Rivera's demise which he already knew to be the work of Zack Hamilton. Additionally, he finds and takes a sample of blood from under one of Cassie's fingernails. Jamie convinces her lover, Detective Joey Quinn, to stay with her because she is frightened, thus delaying him from going on a hunt for Zack who he also suspects. Dexter again meets with Hannah McKay at the marina and agrees to acquire documents and credit cards to facilitate her escape from the country. In the meantime, Debra Morgan is on the hunt for Hannah, determined to halt her interference once and for all. Niki Walters has started to work in the police lab for her pseudo-father Vince Masuka. Dex later determines that it is, in fact, Zack's blood found on Cassie. He approaches Doctor Evelyn Vogel with this information and states emphatically that, this being the murder of a second innocent woman, Zack, who has disappeared, is not adapting to the 'code' and therefor must be eliminated.—Harry Tumilson
- Open at the scene of Cassie's murder. Even while analyzing the scene, all Dexter can think about is Hannah. Cassie's murder appears to be impulsive, committed by someone she knows. Dexter is still worried that it was Zach and spots some blood that might belong to his protégé.
Dexter meets Hannah at the marina. She needs a new passport and he says he'll help her. He thinks she needs to get out of Miami as soon as possible.
The blood Dexter found under Cassie's nails belonged to Zach. He has to make sure Zach's never found by Miami Metro, since the two are so closely connected. Nikki has started her part-time position in Masuka's department. Quinn points out to Dexter the similarity between Norma and Cassie's faces. Both were bludgeoned in similar fashion.
Dexter and Vogel talk about not being able to find Zach. He blames her for Cassie's death since she talked him out of killing Zach. Dexter tells her that Zach knows too much about him and has now killed two innocent women.
Dexter sees online that Zach is on the run and using his own credit card. Debra drops by to ask about Cassie's case and asks where things are with Hannah. He tells her about the abusive husband and Debra is starting to freak out. Dexter assures her she'll be out of their lives soon, but Debra thinks Hannah should be locked up.
Dexter suggests Hannah come with him to the Keys for the night.
Debra shows Elway there is a combined reward of $500,000 for the capture of Hannah. He says he's interested and the two head down to the marina. Hannah's yacht is gone and Elway questions Debra's judgment.
Jamie tells Quinn she's scared and doesn't want to be alone. He reluctantly agrees to stay with her.
Meanwhile, Debra is tracking Dexter through the tracker she had placed on his car, and can see that he's headed towards the Keys. Debra calls Dexter looking for Hannah. She presses him for information as to his location but he's vague and gets off the phone quickly. Dexter is of course with Hannah. He tells her about Zach and Vogel's relationship to the code.
On her way to find Dexter, Debra calls Elway and tells him she thinks Hannah is headed to the Keys. He's figured out via a dock master that Hannah's husband didn't show for his flight. Debra wonders if Hannah killed him.
While having lunch Hannah asks Dexter how she thinks of her. They spot a police cruiser nearby and Hannah is nervous. Dexter brings Hannah to the motel where he thinks Zach is staying. He goes inside and finds the room covered in plastic and sees knives on the bed. Dexter tells Harry that Zach is making a lot of mistakes and wonders if Dexter "has to do this." Dexter confirms that he does and tells Harry he's going to use Zach's own room.
Quinn meets with Cassie's boyfriend and shows him a picture of Zach. He says Zach looks familiar but can't place him.
Matthews asks Quinn about Cassie's case. Quinn doesn't tell him about pursuing Zach.
Dexter shows Hannah Zach's kill room set-up. Zach comes home and Dexter puts a knife to his throat. Zach tells Dexter he was going after Sean Decker, a kid he know from high school who killed somebody on spring break. He swears he didn't kill Cassie and proves to Dexter that he couldn't have done it based on the time stamp on his camera. Dexter is happy that Zach is following the code. Zach shows Dexter that he has Decker in his trunk. He meant to knock him out but ended up having to hit him a number of times. Dexter points out mistakes that Zach has made and tells him he'll help him clean up the scene. Hannah agrees to clean up the room while the two of them take care of Decker. Zach cut his finger on the car door, which could explain how his blood was on Cassie.
Hannah finds Debra waiting for her in the room with handcuffs. She wants to bring Hannah in. Hannah says Debra will have to shoot her. Hannah tells Dexter is what is driving her.
Zach falls asleep during the ride and Harry points out the similarities to when Dexter was young. Harry thinks Hannah is a complication, but wonder if perhaps he now has a stronger desire than killing.
Hannah tells Debra she loves Dexter and that he loves her as well. She asks Debra if she really wants to hurt him. At this point Dexter walks in, followed by Zach. Debra says she doesn't want to know anything else and leaves.
Dexter brings Zach to Vogel, telling her that he is "a very fast learner." Zach lets it slip that Hannah is in the car and Vogel invites all them in for dinner, actually having three psycho killers as guests and knowing they are. She looks very intrigued and happy, anyway.
During dinner Vogel starts talking about hobbies and Hannah asks the doctor how she got into her field. Vogel changes the subject and says she's surprised at the affection shared by Dexter and Hannah. Vogel thinks they make a good and bad couple. Dexter thinks the scene of Cassie's murder doesn't make sense and shows the other three a few pictures. He tells Zach about finding his blood and wonders if somebody sabotaged his car on purpose to set him up.
An exhausted Debra returns to work. She tells Elway that Hannah is a lost cause. Debra says she doesn't care about money and wonders if perhaps she's not cut out to be a PI. She wants what she does for a living to matter and is clearly considering going back to Miami Metro.
Dexter drops Hannah off at her hotel room. He's made arrangement for her travel to the Bahamas. Eventually she may move to South America and promises to keep in touch with Dexter. Eventually they can't help themselves and start kissing. Clothes come off and they end up in bed.
Dexter comes home and finds Zach dead with a huge chunk of his skull missing. It looks as if the Brain Surgeon is the killer. Vogel has received a chunk of Zach's brain, like she did with the other victims of the Brain Surgeon. Dexter disposes of the body.
We see Elway making calls about Hannah recently being in Miami.
Before Hannah gets on the plane Dexter tells her not to leave. They embrace.
