Django Unchained: The TVOne Special (2012)
*** (out of 4)
Cathy Hughes hosts this documentary taking a look at the making of DJANGO UNCHAINED. For forty-plus minutes we get to hear from Jamie Foxx, Kerry Washington and Quentin Tarantino as they talk about the making of the film as well as the controversy that would probably come from it. This is a rather mixed bag because on one hand the cast members have a lot of great things to say but on the other hand it seems that Hughes wants to constantly push the controversial button. There are also times where she comes across way too gushy for the film's own good and these moments just seem a little fake. With that said, fans of the movie will certainly want to hear from the people involved and we get to hear some interesting stories like how Tarantino shipped the project around, how Foxx got involved and how the hip hop community accepted the film. Some of the most interesting moments deal with Foxx defending the film and it's funny because he talks about how he ran into Spike Lee who promised not to bad mouth the film yet we see how that turned out. One wishes that more attention had been spent on the influences for the film but overall fans should enjoy this.
