Hilarious!
I was fortunate enough to see this fun little film at the Hamilton Film Festival. It was fantastic! The writing was very good, with lots of 'guffaw' moments and subtle hilarity that almost come and go before you even knew they were there. Some of the jokes landed with a thud, but most were great. I laughed out loud many times. Apparently there were over 40 pop culture references and I think I caught most of them as some were very blatant but others were quite subtle. For example, do you remember the 'You Got It, Pontiac!' slogan? from the late 70s/early 80s? It's in there. As are nods to Alanis Morissette, Justin Bieber, the Ontario Egg Council, Star Wars, and many more.
The detail in the background was fun too, lots of little sight gags were peppered throughout. I love that kind of thing.
The puppets were great and most of the voice work was very good for a cast of non-actors. You can see that a lot of time and care went into creating a 1950s look.
The music was really good but most of it was stock, however the original opening score by Hamilton musician Nathan Fleet was great!
With lots of silly twists and turns, plenty of absurdity and double entendres (the gynaecologist's name is Dr. Buschmeiner), it's just long enough to be enjoyable and not wear out its welcome.
You can see that it was made on a very low budget, but it plays into the B-movie feel of the genre and adds to the overall feel of the movie. Plus there's nothing in there that isn't safe for the kids.
If you love classic B-movies, Ed Wood, the Muppets, and fart jokes, then I highly recommend that you see this film.
