- Someone once said of jazz legend Erroll Garner that playing the piano for him was as easy as breathing is for you or for me. In a triumphant career that lasted forty years, Erroll Garner pushed the playability of the piano to its limits, developed an international reputation, and made an indelible mark on the jazz world. And yet his story has never been told. Until now.—Anonymous
- Erroll Garner's personality and unique musicianship are demonstrated and discussed, with clips of Erroll playing and also talking, demonstrating the affability and humour that made him such a delight on the keyboard, and the modesty that made him so loved, both in the USA and as an ambassador abroad, as well as his superb ability and originality when playing the piano. There are family memories from his big sister, Ruth and there is a clip of his talented brother Linton. There are interviews with Jim Doran, his biographer; Woody Allen, the director and a fan; and Steve Allen, the TV presenter; as well other jazz pianists, such as the great Ahmad Jamal and Dick Hyman, who can discuss his technique; and Ernest McCarty who accompanied, and revered, him. There is also an interview with George Avakian who produced the best-selling Concert By the Sea from a tape a GI had made for the troops who couldn't attend the concert. Erroll's playfulness is well demonstrated by the clip of Honeysuckle Rose in which his extended intro confounds Eddie Calhoun, his then bassist as much as the audience, and the segue into the Wedding March causes much amusement. Often said to be the creator of the most happy piano sound ever, this film tries to rectify the underrating in some quarters of this true master of jazz. At 53 minutes it is disappointingly short - I would have liked twice as much again.—Lifelong Garnerphile
