For a victim led drama that is the end of Katherine Kelley, the nominal female star of the series.
By the beginning of the second episode, Emily Jackson has been killed. Her children unaware that their mother was a prostitute to make ends meet.
The police break the news to her husband Sydney Jackson and then bring him in for questioning. He immediately becomes a suspect for two murders before the forensics comes in.
Meanwhile DCS Dennis Hoban is reluctantly sidelined by way of a promotion. DCS Jim Hobson takes over but he is even more clueless. Not taking seriously a black woman who was attacked and managed to give a description of the Ripper.
If there was a sympathy for the victim, then there was some for Marcella Claxton. The police spurred on by racism refused to believe that she was not a sex worker or that she was actually attacked by a white man. Her description of a man with frizzy hair seemed that of a black man to the police.
I do think that this story should had been done in the perspective of police incompetence. Instead it becomes a police procedural that treats some of them with kid gloves.
