A great film about a great artist
This is a wonderfully inventive and creative film. Which plays around with the documentary form in a fun and playful manner but that ends with an ultimately sobering thought: If we put a price on everything, judge an artists success on popularity and sales, we may well be missing out on some of the great art being made, and creating a world wherein it is no longer made. Luke Haines is the perfect metaphor for this argument for a privileging of Art above economic concerns, as he is a pure artist, working not for financial reward but purely because he is "compelled" as he say's himself. McCann's film will make you want to discover more of Haines work and cause you to rethink everything from; what exactly the past is, how we remember it, how film can present it, the problems with the idea of truth in cinema and just where is the place of art in our modern capitalist system. Art may not save the world, but it may save us. A must see if you get the chance. Highly recommended
