Battle of the Sects is based on the real Brother Jed, Jed Smock, who visits Cal State Long Beach and other universities every year.
Battle of the Sects was scheduled to be released just days after the Benghazi terror attacks, which at the time were rumored to be motivated by another film, "The Innocence of Muslims". The actor portraying Brother Jed feared for the safety of the cast and crew and wished for the movie to scrapped. A compromise was reached with Micro Entertainment; the premiere was delayed & Brother Jed received an anonymous credit.
