Cinema"Most fairytales don't feature two girls. Also, the two girls look totally different from each other," says 10-year-old Pranaya. Sowmya Rajendran"Elsa, the past is not what it seems." Thus begins the trailer of Frozen 2, the sequel to Disney's hugely successful 2013 animated film Frozen directed by Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee. The line is typical of stories in the fantasy genre where the protagonist learns something new about their past in subsequent installments. However, it's also a befitting comment on fairytales about princesses that seldom allow their "good" female protagonists any agency. The ones who are powerful are immediately characterised as wicked and are defeated or killed. Frozen was hailed as an important feminist film when it released, though some were not really convinced about Disney's intentions. The film was inspired by Hans Christian Anderson's fairytale, The Snow Queen. While the titular Snow Queen in the story is the chief villain,...

Okay, well, I missed a few unseen contenders. I had a feeling I might since suddenly messages were being left on my phone from publicists pitching fringe hopefuls. In addition to 16 of the Best Animated Feature Film contenders we have already thoroughly charted (and minus "Dino Time," which didn't bother -- who can blame them? -- and "Arjun: The Warrior Prince," which I had been led to believe by Disney would qualify), the Academy has announced five more qualifying titles for a big ole' list of 21. So that means we will definitely have a full slate of five nominees in the...

In my predictions I had 17 animated films that looked like they would be contending for Best Animated Feature at this year's Oscars. Of those 17, all but one made the final list of what turned out to be 21 total films. Disney's joint effort with Utv Pictures, Arjun: The Warrior Prince, did not make the final list despite word it would be getting an Oscar qualifying run. My assumption is the fact the film was available on Netflix Instant before it ever had that run, which would make it ineligible, but unfortunately I was unable to get anyone from Disney on the phone for confirmation before posting this article. As for the five new films I hadn't previously counted on, they include Adventures in Zambezia, Delhi Safari, Hey Krishna, The Mystical Laws and Walter & Tandoori's Christmas. At this moment I don't have any information on these five films, but I have already...

We're off! Last week I offered up five days of first look predictions including Best Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Adapted Screenplay and Original Screenplay and yet, we aren't even close to done. There are still 13 more categories to explore. I'll be holding off on categories such as Best Foreign Language Feature and Best Documentary until the Academy announces their short lists, but elsewhere I think it's safe to start taking a look and so I thought I'd begin with Best Animated Feature considering I have discussed it quite a bit already. About a month ago exactly I presented the following, alphabetical list of contenders, which is probably the best place to begin. Arjun: The Warrior Prince (Walt Disney Pictures) Brave (Walt Disney Pictures / Pixar) Dr. Seuss' The Lorax (Universal Pictures) Frankenweenie (Walt Disney Pictures) From Up On Poppy Hill (GKids) Hotel Transylvania (Columbia Pictures) Ice Age: Continental Drift...

Los Angeles Disney fans get a special treat beginning Monday night. Disney has taken the late slot at their flagship El Capitan Theater on Hollywood Boulevard and will screen their recently acquired Indian animated film Arjun: The Warrior Prince for a one-week only, Oscar-qualifying run. It’ll play at 9:20 p.m. from September 3-9. With a concurrent Academy qualifying [...]...

I'm still putting together my first round of Oscar predictions to be unveiled shortly after the conclusion of the Toronto International Film Festival, and one category I have already loaded with a group of contenders is the Best Feature Animation category. Today GKids made filling out the list even easier by sending over a press release announcing the four films they will be giving Oscar qualifying runs for consideration and by my count we are now up to 17 total contenders with distribution and release plans. In alphabetical order, here's the list so far: Arjun: The Warrior Prince (Walt Disney Pictures) Brave (Walt Disney Pictures / Pixar) Dr. Seuss' The Lorax (Universal Pictures) Frankenweenie (Walt Disney Pictures) From Up On Poppy Hill (GKids) Hotel Transylvania (Columbia Pictures) Ice Age: Continental Drift (20th Century Fox) A Liar's Autobiography - The Untrue Story of Monty Python's Graham Chapman (Brainstorm Media) Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted...

As noted in the updates of Monday's Best Animated Feature Film ponderings (which revealed the acquisition of Cannes hit "Ernest & Celestine" for a 2013 release), the indie distributor Gkids will be qualifying four films for Oscar contention this year: "From Up on Poppy Hill," "Le Tableau," "The Rabbi's Cat" and "Zarafa." Added to Disney's "Secret of the Wings" and "Arjun: The Warrior Prince" (which were confirmed to me as well), that puts us at 17 titles officially in the running thus far, one more than the 16 necessary for a full slate of five nominees. And I don't see any...
