- TriviaNew York producer Howard Smith bought the rights to the song "Rhinestone Cowboy" and made a deal with Avco Embassy to commission a script. But after first-time screenwriter Phil Alden Robinson completed the script, the studio decided not to proceed with the project and put it into turnaround. Twentieth Century Fox's then-head of production, Sherry Lansing, was enthusiastic enough to buy it from Embassy for about $60,000, telling Robinson that it was the best love story and the best comedy they had read in years. They loved the dialogue and talked of offering Robinson an overall deal in which he would write, direct and produce future projects. Unfortunately Lansing soon departed the studio for Paramount and Rhinestone (1984) would - be heavily re-written its featured movie star - eventually be an unmitigated disaster for all involved. But years later, Sherry Lansing, now Chairman of Paramount Pictures, offered Robinson the opportunity to direct their latest Jack Ryan series installment, The Sum of All Fears (2002).
