Summaries

  • In 1875 country girl Denise Lovett arrives in Newcastle to work in her uncle Edmund's drapery shop but he cannot afford to take on new staff due to the competition from the Paradise,the newly opened department store run by handsome go-getter John Moray. Denise gets a job in the Paradise's haberdashery department along with friendly Pauline and catty Clara,who once had a fling with Moray - supervised by the strict Miss Audrey. Moray's assistant Dudley is perturbed that Moray is buying on credit without the funds to pay his suppliers so Moray persuades Lord Glendenning to invest in the Paradise whilst telling Glendenning's daughter Katherine tht he cannot marry her as she had hoped. He uses as his excuse the memory of his late wife. When Clara tries to humiliate her in front of Katherine Denise reverses the situation,proving she is an excellent saleswoman,and she receives Moray's personal thanks and the guarantee of permanent employment. Moray also instigates a sale,which does very well though it is interrupted by an irate Edmund.—don @ minifie-1
  • Denise Lovett moves to Newcastle hoping to live with her uncle Edmund, a dressmaker who had always promised her a home and a job. Business is not good and Edmund blames the Paradise, a department across the street that was not much larger than his own tiny shop just a few years ago but has now grown and dominates the trade. Denise however applies for a position in the ladies department at the Paradise and soon finds herself working for Miss Audrey. The owner of the Paradise, Moray, resists Katherine Glendenning's obvious interest in him but urges her to visit the dress department where Denise makes quite an impression. Moray decides to have a grand one day sale and hopes to have sufficient customers so as to impress a potential investor, Katherine's father Lord Glendenning.—garykmcd
  • The country girl Denise arrives in Newcastle in 1875 to start working with her uncle, the draper and bespoke dressmaker Edmund Lovett, in his little shop. But all the small shops have become nearly bankrupt because of The Paradise, the first department store in the city. As Edmund cannot offer her any job, Denise goes to The Temple. She is employed as a saleswoman at the Ladies Wear Department, which is headed by the meticulous Miss Audrey. The Temple is run by the venturesome businessman Moray, supported by his more prudent childhood friend Dudley. Moray inherited the store from his wife, who died mysteriously soon after their marriage. When Denise asks about this, the other girls say that they are forbidden to talk about it. Lord Glendenning's daughter Katherine, one of the richest women in the city, is infatuated with Moray. He rejects her marriage proposals, saying it would be bad for his business, which relies on the charming of women. But Moray needs fresh capital to be able to expand, and loans money from Lord Glendenning. To attract new customers he organizes a grand sale for one day, which becomes a huge success.—Maths Jesperson {maths.jesperson1@comhem.se}
