Central Florida's Horror Beacon of Light
First off: If you are expecting a "serious" movie, don't bother. Go watch the latest the latest Michael Bay abomination.
Second off: if you are expecting a "family fun" horror movie, go watch the newest "Twilight" movie and convince yourself you're not bored housewife.
....with that out of the way, "Rock Bottom Creek" IS a fun little ditty from a few Horror movie buffs. It's relatively a simple plot line; boy and girl head out on a road trip to get away from their doomed and gloomy past only to find out their future is nothing BUT doom and gloom. They end up in a town where they find out things are not what they seem and find themselves at the wrath of the local police department, more specifically a raging, egomaniac copy who is fond of pink lemonade and zebra cakes. And he's got some gnarly muttonchops as well.
Plot line aside, this film is just fun. It's got a lot of great lines. The acting, even though are done by amateurs, is believable to the point where I know I am watching a film by people who don't exactly want to half-ass anything. Mick B. Sawyer who plays Sheriff Ringo Anderson comes at you with one of the more energetic and animated performances in the movie. I personally know the guy and I am not trying to brown-nose him....well maybe I am just due so I hope he forgets that I owe him a pack of cigarettes...but his character reeks of those older Horror villains that you literally WANT to die from the get-go. Think Capt. Rhodes from Romero's "Day of The Dead" and that's the kinda of "Oh man I really want this guy to die, but I want to see him live a bit longer because of his one-liners" type deal. Also the rest of the actors give convincing and funny performances.
A couple other things I'd like to point out is the scenery. Me being from Central Florida, it's great to see the more rural areas on the huge screen during it's premiere. You get an intense feeling of isolation and a little bit or paranoia much like John carpenter's "The Thing" remake. You also get an idea just how god-awful the heat, humidity, and pesky mosquitos are. Much like weird comparison to the original "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and while I just said that, there is a certain character and scene that is a nice little homage to the movie as well as "Halloween"....again like I said, this movie was made by horror movie fans and you'll see a lot of references and "OH I KNOW WHERE THEY GOT THAT FROM!" comments going through your head when viewing this.
Truth be told, I don't see why this couldn't become a cult classic 10- 15-20 years down the line. If anything it will prove that Florida in general has no shortage or influence from the horror movie genre and also a gigantic fanatical fan population. It will also teach you a thing or two about coming down to Central Florida, because it's not all rednecks and bar fights.
