Christmas chaos
TheLittleSongbird15 March 2022
Absolutely love Christmas and have done for a long time, something that has been made clear many times over the years by me here. The idea for 'Anything but Christmas' didn't sound too bad, though it was clear that it was going to be more a drama than the romantic comedy or fantasy sort of Christmas film from as early on as hearing the not so positive title. Sergio Di Zio was great in 'Angels and Ornaments' and have always had a soft spot for Christopher Lloyd.

Unfortunately, 'Anything but Christmas' didn't work for me. It didn't strike me as a terrible film and there are definitely far worse Christmas films out there, but it is hard to warm to a film where the characters are hard to like, where the pessimism is taken too far and where the charm is too far and between. Really hate to sound like a humbug, which is in no way the intent or the want, but when it comes to meeting my criteria for Christmas films 'Anything but Christmas' doesn't meet most of it.

Di Zio does a good job and despite having a character that is over-negative he does bring some charm. Lloyd is always watchable and brings some suitably cantankerous vim to the film when needed even when a little more subdued to usual, just wish there was more.

The film looks nice, especially the scenery which is magical at its best. The music has moments where it is appropriately festive and nostalgic, despite it being emotionally one-dimensional (melancholic is the main mood). Really appreciated its well intended and sincere messaging too.

Elaine Hendrix however overdoes it in a role that is even more over-negative than Di Zio's. The rest of the supporting cast don't make much impression and are a mix of forgettable and annoying. Hendrix and Di Zio's chemistry doesn't ever properly ignite or grow, got the sense that they didn't seem to like each other much. Am going to have to agree with those that have talked about how unpleasant the characters are, not every film has to have likeable characters as a rule but it does depend on whether they still manage to be interesting and well developed and whether they are still meant to be rootable. None of the characters are interesting, all are flimsily developed and it is impossible for one to root for any character that has negative character traits taken to extremes. Hence what is meant when saying that 'Anything but Christmas' went too far on the pessimism, especially with Hendrix's character who never really develops and her selfishness is overdone which made her come over as obnoxious.

It is not a well written film too. The attempts at humour are very thin and not really that funny, mean-spirited in parts. The sentiment gets far too much, even for a drama meant to be sentimental, the anger directed at everybody is even more overboard, and the messaging could have been done with more subtlety. Motivations are too vague and in some cases unexplained, the lead character's reasoning for treating the others the way she does while being guilty of what she is berating them for herself is too in the air. The whole phobia of Christmas angle is actually a real life issue and was potentially relatable, again that was underdeveloped and the amount of times it's reiterated made it come over as heavy-handed too. The story can be silly (especially in the latter stages) with a too pat ending that didn't feel warranted and some dreary pacing, as well as showing a lack of charm, subtlety and a lighter touch was needed. The unpleasantness of the characters and the excessive negativity made it come over as mean-spirited in parts.

Overall, lacklustre. 4/10.

like many others Christmas movies. bitter-sweet, with few trips around dark memories from childhood. and the family as the best cure. modern, for the hypothesis of vulnerable Prince Charming, helped by the wise step son and the powerful Princess. the best part - inspired skill of Sergio Di Zio to propose his character as convincing, realistic and seductive. short, an inspired variation for a generous theme. remembering old small truths and using the fear by Christmas holiday, not so rare in our time, in wise way. so, a nice film. not great, maybe not memorable. but, useful.

ugh... UGH!

How in the world can this have a 6.3 rating here? It's like watching a TV commercial that just keeps going. I couldn't stomach it past the 20 minute mark. The two lead characters just keep going, minute after minute, being very uptight and taking it out on each other, instead of talking like human beings would.

Whoever wrote this script should rethink their profession. This is VERY bad viewing. It's like having an itch and not scratching it, for minute after minute. The movie has to do the scratching; the viewer just watches. But the scratch keeps not coming, and instead we just keep squirming and wishing the itch would STOP already.

Ugh.

Maybe it improves later, but I just cannot take any more. This is one of the worst movie watching experiences I've ever had.

I will say that aside from the AWFUL experience of watching the two leads being uptight, annoying, immature, co-miserable punks, some of the other performances were alright in the short time I saw them. So the movie gets a 2 for that. But that's it. UGH!

Good ending!

I notices the title scroll by on the TV listings and I thought it sounded different. I caught it about a half hour into it and it was at a relatively interesting and exciting point in the plot. Overall I'd say the humour and romance are sort of cheap and cheesy compared to some major films but the spirit and heart of the story are strong. Ultimately the end is the best part in my opinion so don't let the one other review on here turn you away. Somehow I don't think many people will be checking these reviews prior to watching the film because it is one of those TV movies that most people who watch it would he channel surfers like I. Enjoy it of you haven't seen it!

Horrendous

This movie is so tedious and idiotic...and NOT in a "funny" way. It's as if none of the actors were given full scripts to work from..no one speaks in complete, understandable sentences and WAY too much time is wasted on ....what I PRESUME.... is supposed to be funny spots?Conversations never seem to come to any clear conclusion.I have actually watched it in its entirety..hoping there would be SOMETHING worthwhile at the end....but there was no tie ups...no explanations for the lead actress's very odd behavior and little more to explain the lead actor's hatred of Christmas.

To make it worse.... the lead actress LOOKS and SOUNDS like Nancy Grace which is just too much for anyone to HAVE to tolerate for over a minute.A complete waste of a movie.

Great Christmas movie
jbernardone19 July 2014
Excellent movie! It was light, funny and just what I needed. One of my favorite actors, Sergio Di Zio is in it and was awesome. Elaine Hendrix was in it. She's never been a favorite, but i absolutely adored her in it. The supporting cast was great, too. There was a realistic storyline that was touching and believable, I saved it on my DVR from the first year and watched it throughout the years. Unfortunately, it got erased and I haven't seen it since Christmas. I'm trying to fine a place where I can purchase it, but haven't been able to yet. Any suggestions of where it can be purchased? I'm really needing a Anything But Christmas fix.

not great but...

a sentimental comedy, like many others at first sigh. one of Christmas films, mixture of same ingredients in similar dose. but nice for the crumbs of courage - Sergio Di Zio as vulnerable Charming Prince, Elaine Hendrix as the strong - delicate Princess, Christmas and its nuances, Christopher Lloyd who gives a special role who reminds the Scrooge 's way. its basic virtue - a wise-warm image about family, fight against dark childhood memories, second chance and love , old values and a beautiful end. it could be a not bad choice for Chrismas period like a hot chocolate cup. but, in same measure, it has small pieces from Frank Capra universe - the ideal for sweet movies fans. and that could transform it in an useful support of naive joy. result - far to be great, it is a nice movie about profound values at base of each life.
