- The Battle Rounds continue
The first battle comes from Team Blake, Liz Davis versus Nicole Johnson, two country girls. He gives them "Baggage Claim" by Miranda Lambert, who happens to be his wife. Nicole is 18 and her family just moved to Nashville. Liz is 25 and has lived in Nashville since she was 18. Blake also moved to Nashville right around the time he turned 18. Blake very politely points out Liz is getting a little old and better break out now if she's going to.
In their final rehearsal, Blake warns Liz to watch her nasal sound so it doesn't cloud her diction. He warns Nicole not to be pitchy at one point.
The night of the battle, Liz says she respects Nicole as a person, but she's going to come out fighting. Nicole wants to show her parents everything they've done for her is worth it. They battle it out.
After, Christina tells Blake he's got a tough choice. Ceelo still is impressed with Nicole since turning around for her. Adam thinks they're really close, but gives the edge to Nicole. Blake knows his wife will be impressed when she hears it. Liz was more relaxed than he expected and he noticed Nicole lost her breath for the first time. He wishes he had more help from his fellow coaches, but finally decides Liz is the winner.
Nobody steals Nicole. She breaks down in tears backstage, saying she doesn't know what went wrong. Blake comes backstage to give her a hug and tell her she did a good job.
On to Team Adam, Alessandra Guercio versus Kayla Nevarez. Alessandra attends LaGuardia High School for the Performing Arts. Kayla is performing for her sick dad. Adam picked "Wide Awake" by Katy Perry. Mary J Blige and Adam are both impressed by Kayla's power. They warn Alessandra not to over-pronounce or over-perform. "Your voice is amazing, but you gotta believe it for us to believe it," Mary J says.
Adam thinks Kayla is more natural and Alessandra is more studied. Adam warns Kayla not to get sharp on one note in the chorus.
The night of the battle they sing and have Ceelo rocking out.
Blake likes Alessandra's gravely sound and thinks it's neck and neck. Christina urges them to find their personalities. Ceelo thinks Alessandra had more attitude with her softer side.
Adam tells Alessandra her performance still felt a little trained and Kayla was a little pitchy at times. He felt insecurity from Alessandra that made him "a little bit sad." Adam remembers Kayla telling him they better win after he picked her. The winner is Kayla.
Christina pauses to address Alessandra, telling her she wants her to be confident. Then she pushes her "steal" button to keep her, surprising everyone, especially Alessandra. "She comes from a trained background that I feel a real connection to and I always just go with my gut," Christina says.
We peek in on Team Ceelo, which included Ben Taub against Mycle Wastman. Ceelo picked Mycle.
Adam paired two soul singers, Adanna Duru versus Michelle Brooks-Thompson singing Beyonce "Crazy in Love." He picked Michelle.
Team Christina also featured the duo Beat Frequency against Laura Vivas (in a bedazzled bra) singing "Poker Face." She picked Laura.
Back to Team Ceelo, with Emily Earle against Mackenzie Bourg. They go meet Ceelo and Rob Thomas, who is Mackenzie's idol. They're singing "Good Time" by Owl City. Ceelo likes their youthfulness together.
Emily feels a little out of her country comfort zone. Ceelo hopes she'll bring her own style to it. Mackenzie worries about singing without his instrument.
One the final rehearsal, Ceelo makes Mackenzie take the guitar off.
At the battle round, Mackenzie resolves to shine without his guitar comfort blanket. After they perform, Adam says the chemistry wasn't what he wanted it to be for this point in the competition, but he'd go with Emily. Blake tells Mackenzie he has a good ear and strong voice, but too many breaks make him sound squeaky.
He thinks Emily has an "authentic country voice" and he'd give the edge to her. Christina thinks Mackenzie was the better time.
Ceelo thinks Mackenzie could sing just about any kind of music. He also noticed the nerves. He says he's torn, but the winner is Mackenzie.
Blake resists stealing Emly because he hasn't seen that "break out" moment. Mackenzie struggles for words backstage as he's mobbed by his family. His dad points out the last time they were all together was when Mackenzie almost died.
The teams are recapped and that's it for the fourth night of battle rounds.
