Synopsis

  • "The Voice" - Blind Auditions #7 - Sept. 24, 2012

    The blind auditions continues.

First up is Michelle Brooks-Thompson who works at a bank and sings for her customers. She has a husband and two adorable daughters. She sings "Proud Mary" by Tina Turner/Creedence Clearwater Revival. She's got great tone and sounds nice, with maybe a little heaving affectation. Adam and Blake turn during the slow open. Christina turns near the end. She's obviously very touched by the response. She chooses Adam.

Next up is Diego Val he had a childhood disease that almost prevented him from walking, which is when he discovered music. He now sings for kids in hospitals. He's from Peru. He sings "Animal" by Neon Trees and accompanies himself on guitar. He sounds a lot like the original with a little more grain in his voice. He sings a bit of it in Spanish. Just when it seems that no one will turn Cee Lo spins. So, he's on Cee Lo's team.

Next up is Lauren Brooke who grew up dyslexic and very self-conscious growing up. Also her uncle who passed away 4 years ago had a learning disability so she's here for him. She sings "Cowboy Casanova" by Carrie Underwood. She's very pretty and it's fine karaoke/cover band vocals. She doesn't seem to have a lot of range and she hits a string of bad notes. No one turns. They all tell her that she's good but she had pitch issues that keep her getting a spot.

Next up is Suzanna Choffel is a music teacher of very little kids in Austin,TX. She wants to inspire her kids and it's her time to shine. She sings "Landslide" by Fleetwood Mac accompanying herself on guitar. She has a Stevie Nicks-ian voice, a raspy alto. She's not showing a ton of range or power but she has a nice character to her voice. Blake turns. She chooses Blake.

We get a quick one two look at two of Blake's picks Michaela Paige and Ryan Jirovec .

Next up is Dez Duron who tried out last year and calls it the best 90 seconds of my life even though no one turned and he dropped out of school to come. He says he's back with something to prove. He sings "Sara Smile" by Hall & Oates. He's got a nice rasp and tone to his voice and sweet falsetto. Blake turns and recognizes him and is happy. He baits Christina into turning. Cee Lo then turns. He's so excited as are the judges. He chooses Christina.

Next up is VJ who teaches music at conservatory which he loves but wishes he was doing it also. He wants Cee Lo as a judge and to that end he sings "Forget You." He has a decent falsetto, cute stage presence, and excellent timing but it's just not a great performance. Oddly he has a couple of wobbly pitch moments in his bottom end. It doesn't work but Cee Lo comes up to sing the song with him and he seems happy with this.

Next up is Alexis Marceaux whose life was upended by Hurricane Katrina. We see home video footage of their devastated home. Nothing was salvaged. She sings "Go Your Own Way" by Fleetwood Mac. She has some rhythm/timing issues with the band and a couple of pitch problems but she has some strong moments as well. Cee Lo is the only one who turns so she is on his team.

We get a quick montage of people who got chosesn: Sam James went to Adam, Laura Vivas went to Christina and Lelia Broussard went to Blake.

Next up is Brandon Mahone a 17-year-old from Indiana by way of Chicago. They left Chicago which was too violent where they were. He sings "I Wish It Would Rain" by the Temptations. He seems like a sweet kid with a sweet voice just right for a classic Motown jam like this. Adam turns first, followed by Cee Lo. Then Christina joins in. He chooses Adam.

Next up is Jeffrey James a valet parker from Nashville who admits he's a shameless self promoter. He sings "A Little Less Conversation" by Elvis Presley. He has an ease to his performing style vocally that's appealing, good grain, timing, and pitch. The song doesn't allow for much range or power but he sounds solid. They have put through worse singers but no one turns for him. Adam says he was great and unique and ended strong. Blake was sad it came too late. Christina says he's technically great but was looking for something specific and says she can tell he's pissed off.

We get a montage of the nos.

Next up is Jordan Pruitt who was a very minor "teen pop star" on Disney but is now looking for a second chance and to play more mature music. She really wants Christina to turn. She sings "The One That Got Away" by Jake Owen. She has a very "teen pop star" voice. Christina turns around so she is on her team.

Finally we have Terisa Griffin a 42-year-old who shows off her "diva stroll." She worked for Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Jerry Butler. She tells Carson she's too cute to give up. She sings "Someone Like You" by Adele. She has a commanding style, a little rasp, and nice tone. She does have a little shake from nerves in her voice. Christina and Blake turn. She's very sassy and funny. And then she chooses Blake.
