Red light in a darkroom is to protect the black-and-white photo paper during exposures. Any extraneous white light in the room will ruin exposures if not passing through a negative exclusively. When Shane and Laura are making a print in the darkroom, several white lights are quite obviously in the room. White light is only turned on after the print has been immersed in fixer.
