- The story of Srikanth Bolla (Rajkummar Rao), an Indian entrepreneur, who gained prominence as the founder of Bollant Industries, a company created in 2012 to employ unskilled and differently enabled individuals in creating ecologically-friendly products.
Srikanth was born visually impaired in Seetharamapuram village in Machilipatnam, in then undivided Andhra Pradesh, India. Srikanth's demonstrates his achievements despite adverse situations.
The day he was born the delight of the father Damodar (Srinivas Beesetty) who named his son after cricketer Krishnamachari Srikkanth turns into dismay when he sees sightless newborn. All the relatives counsel Damodar and his wife Venkatamma to discard the newborn as the world would only treat him like trash and he would have no future. Damodar digs a hole to bury him but is saved by his mother Venkatamma (Anusha Nuthula).
Srikanth grows up in abject poverty with his parents. He stumbles through his own home and learns to take care of himself. His parents turn their attention to their next child Narendra (Aarav Khot) who is born with all organs in working order. Srikanth also has to endure bullying in the local school despite his brilliance. Srikanth is blind, and yet he is the smartest child in class and gives answers to all questions from his teachers. From an early age Srikanth learns that he cannot run, he can only fight. His teacher asks Damodar to send Srikanth to a special school (The Asha School for Blind) in Hyderabad. The school itself is free for students with special needs.
In Hyderabad he joins a special school where he shines. From then on, he is mentored by his teacher Devika (Jyothika) who hand-holds him. Devika helps Srikanth to learn using a walking stick for the blind. Srikanth complains to a visiting dignitary that the Principal (Arun Malik) is corrupt and doesn't even spend half the donated funds on the students. Srikanth is thrown out of the school and the Principal even takes away his walking stick. Devika finds Srikanth wandering on the streets, somehow avoiding traffic. Devika takes Srikanth home and tells his parents that from then on, Srikanth is her responsibility. Devika teaches science to Srikanth by recording all books in audio cassettes.
Later, Devika helps him file a court case to study science in XI and XII as a subject (despite scoring 96% in X). Indian higher education system did not provide an option of studying science for visually impaired students. The court case drags on for months, and so Devika starts teaching Srikanth herself. Srikanth argues in court that he is good at science and that the system is designed to exclude people with disabilities. The court grants him permission to study science in XI and XII. In higher secondary school, Srikanth also plays cricket for the visually impaired. With 98%, Srikanth tops the school.
Sri joins the Lead India Movement led by Dr APJ Abdul Kalam (Jameel Khan). Sri states that his goal is to be the first visually impaired President of India. Following this, Sri goes for cricket selection trials in Mumbai and is selected to play for the visually impaired cricket team of India.
Now, Sri is not able to apply to IIT as they also don't allow visually impaired students into science stream. Devika prompts him to try to apply abroad and he gets selected as the first international visually impaired student at Massachusetts Institute of Technology after being denied entry into Indian Institute of Technology. But due to this, Sri is not able to play cricket for India. Haldiram's sponsors Sri's travel and stay in the US, while he gets a full scholarship from MIT. By now, Sri decides that India does not need him.
At MIT he gets support of 2 students Kelly (Clarissa Saaiman) & Edward (Siboniso Tadeus Mbatha) who help him achieve his dreams. The US is a lot more accommodating for students with special needs and here Sri spends the best days of his life.
During his college days, through social media he meets Swati (Alaya F) from Hyderabad who is fascinated with him, and who had sent him a friend request on Facebook. Swati is a medical student, and she comes to the US to do her MD. They meet when Swati comes to pick Sri from MIT. After graduation, Swati, now his girlfriend prompts him to realize his dreams by returning to India. Swati says that back home Sri will be an inspiration to thousands of people.
Again, his mentor Devika helps him to start a computer institute which flops. The facility had a rent of Rs 50,000 per month and a deposit of Rs 4 Lakhs which was too expensive, so Devika starts the computer center on the terrace of her home. The idea flops because nobody was willing to give jobs to visually impaired people, even if they had vocational skills.
Srikanth decides to set up a factory to make recycled paper and create jobs for visually impaired people. But nobody wants to partner with him as they see any sort of special needs venture as charity and not business. After 4 months of rejection, Sri meets Kalam again who agrees to invest in his journey by giving him rs 25 Lakhs.
Later he decides to set up a business (Bollant Industries) with his business partner Ravi Mantha (Sharad Kelkar), where he gives jobs mostly to the disabled. Mantha was impressed with Sri's business acumen and his technical knowledge on the machine equipment inside his factory. Sri could tell what is wrong with a machine by simply listening to its sounds. Sri wants an investment of Rs 8 Crores to get the factory up and running.
Sri's vision was to control the recycled paper packaging market in India, which was experiencing robust growth of 15% per year. Problems arise when the factory is presented unpaid bills of Rs 1.2 Crores as the factory was unoccupied for 2 years. The head of the electricity department sees that the locals look up to Sri as their God and revere him for showing a path of other special needs kids in their communities. Sri is given one year to clear their dues and the interest on the unpaid bills is also waived off.
Sri does not like when the media hails Mantha as the real hero and credits him for Sri's success. One of Sri's school bullies comes to him for a job, but Sri insults him and sends him away. Sri believes that he can create more Mantha, and that Mantha needs him and not the other way around. Sri wants to expand the business with more investment, but Mantha wants the existing factory to become profitable before expanding. Sri prevails and the 2nd factory is also inaugurated, with Sri promising to pay the factory owner Venugopal Rao (Sridhar Murthy) within 6 months.
Swati joins Sri in his factory. Swati points out that Sri is being very harsh towards Mantha who has done nothing but support Sri is only trying to save him from unnecessary risks. Swati tells Sri not to lose his loved ones in the face of his ambition. To accelerate his path to a business award, Sri aligns with politician Vidya Reddy (Sukhita Aiyyar). Mantha is skeptical since politician can misuse businessmen for their own purposes. Its been a year and Sri has not made any payments to Venugopal either. Mantha tells Devika that Sri has changed.
Sri uses Reddy to get Venugopal threatened by police. Mantha tells Sri that he does the wrong things. Mantha promises to pay Venugopal Rs 10 Crores with interest. Devika confronts Sri and says that ambition has blinded him. Sri realizes this when Reddy tries to recruit him into her party and to use him for political gains. Sri realizes his mistake and returns to Devika repentant. Sri apologizes to Mantha and pays off Venugopal. Then Bollant industries gets an investment from the Tata group. Sri even gives a job to his school bully Mahesh.
In 2017, Bollant industries wins the Business Excellence Awards.
