- After an underground boxing fight, Roy, an eager young fighter with a disproving family, receives a phone call from his wealthy toxic mother, who belittles Roy for wanting to box and tells him that he must stop fighting and look for a "proper" job. After the phone call, Roy meets Dave, a boxing coach with a traumatic past. Roy tries to persuade a somewhat closed-off Dave to train him, to which Dave reluctantly agrees. Roy returns home and receives a bombardment of abuse and toxicity from his self-obsessed father. Roy finally cracks, and for the first time in his life, he stands up to the bully that is his father. After Roy erupts and the sad truth about his life is shared, he decides to leave his toxic family behind and focus on boxing. Roy meets up with Dave to begin his training, but Dave can't go through with it; something is holding him back. After Dave learns that Roy is sleeping in his car, he offers Roy a place to crash for the night. Back at Dave's flat, Roy stumbles upon a sort of shrine to boxing and learns that the awards and trophies belong to Dave's son, who sadly died in the ring. Dave begins to open up about his past, and after a deep conversation in which Roy helps Dave see that there are better days ahead, Dave decides it's time to try and move forward with his life; he agrees to train Roy and live the life his son would've wanted him to. The film ends in the boxing gym the next day as Dave and Roy begin to train. During these last scenes, you will see not only the individual development of these characters but the mutual growth they have allowed each other to develop.
