The printed message is in Plattdeutsch (Low German), the spoken language of Old Order Amish and Mennonites. Sheriff Longmire spoke in first year level Hochdeutsch (High German), the standard German language taught in the United States and probably elsewhere. Without special training, students and former students of the latter would not be able to recognize and translate the printed message, except for the word "mich" (me).
