Warning: Spoilers
Here we have the 2012 AVN Awards Show and the title says it all basically because this is the defining awards show from 2012 when it comes to adult films. There was a red carpet ceremony before the actual event that ran for approximately half an hour and the show itself then went on for 80 minutes approximately, not too long for an awards show. The good thing here is that apart from a rather mediocre circus acrobat number at the very start, this is indeed an awards show. One awrad followed the next that's how it should be, no distractions whatsoever. Of course, they could not reenact any porn scenes here live on stage obviously, but still. It's kinda sad I have to name this as a bit of an achievement already, but it is kinda accurate looking at music awards shows mostly, even the defining ones, who basically lose themselves in showing us one song/stage performance after the next, so in the end it is much more of a concert than an awards show. Anyway, luckily not the case here. The host is Dave Attell and this is the second time he hosted I believe after two years earlier. I was a bit surprised early on they have this even being hosted by somebody who is not active in adult movies, but thinking more about it, it makes perfectly sense because he has a comedy show that has a bit to do with adult films and also with the likes of Fallon, Kimmel and others hosting Oscars and other big movie awards, these are not actors either, so good choice here and I think Attell did a decent job. Now as for the ceremony itself, it was a bit difficult for me to appreciate it because I had no clue about any of the actors or movies featured in here. And there were like 3 actresses max that I heard the name of at some point (such as Allie Haze, who presented an award). Still they seemed like a likable bunch overall and that they are getting some undeserved blame for what they are doing in their profession. Okay what else can I say about this one. i think it was a really condensed event, maybe sometimes a bit rushed, but I still liked it occasionally. one thing that I found very confusing though is that apparently this took place in January 2012, but it did not air before May 2012? Now that is a long time. I mean I thought they showed it live, but I guess not. Still, 4 months is massive. As for the categories, they tried to get in some nice ways to come up with something that really matters, be it judging how many (fe)males were in particular scenes, what kind of sex they were having or also where the film originated from. I could not have come up with better categories myself. Comedy is of coruse pretty dirty here, but it's alright. At an awards show like this one, I don't need the host to act like a saint. Only accurate and makes totally sense given the subject. The editing was a bit messy honestly. I always like when they show all the nominees when announcing the winner, but they didn't here. This would have been pretty difficult admittedly too at times because there were 15 nominees or so here and there. Definitely too much! It means less to be nominated this way. I also thought the editing was a bit shoddy and all over the place here and there. Like come on, you can take your time and wait until the winners come to the stage, no need to cut right to the speech. or also how miraculously seconds after receiving the reward, they are back there with the co-host answering her questions outside the big room apparently. Felt a bit starnge as if it is more of a highlight show than an actual broadcast. But it is alright I suppose. Overall, if i really cared about the adult film industry and had been up-to-date with the movies currently playing a big role there, I actually would have enjoyed this and given probably (at least) two stars more and a positive recommendation. But as I am not, I give it a negative thumbs-down overall, even if they did wisely on several occasions. I also liked that the equivalent of a lifetime achievement award went to a producer who is also not an actor here. They do look beyond the expected. Well done. Oh yeah Ron Jeremy was in it too of course. That's all folks.
