- Three interwoven stories of motherhood and the ever-shifting roles we play in life.
- This morning begins like many others for Thalia and Robert. The couple is recovering from miscarrying a baby and each day they test one another's devotion, attempting to shake their habitual suffering. A voyeuristic moment with a stranger, just as they are reconnecting, brings them an unforeseeable and giddy pleasure; a healing moment of sexual and emotional re-awakening. Sue is that stranger, and this passing engagement is only the start of a very unusual day for her. She is a young, together woman, who after learning that she is pregnant, atypically runs out of gas. A mercurial man on a bicycle comes to her aid, and for a fleeting moment allows Sue to celebrate her newfound form. Sharing the happy news with her cold husband, however, levels her out once again. As she contemplates her future, the sound of children on the schoolyard outside, underscores her confusion about the life growing inside her. Young Lara is a bit forgotten on the playground. In a moment of insouciant cruelty, Lara gains the attention of her peers at the expense of a classmate. Later that day, while waiting for her very late mom to pick her up from school, Lara also meets the young man on his bicycle. He stumbles upon the space of Lara's imagination time, a grey zone, where a little girl tries to make sense of her actions and her identity. When her mother finally arrives, a more reflective Lara sees herself and the world anew.—Alexa Coblentz
- Act 1, Awakening
This morning begins like many others for Thalia and Robert. The couple is recovering from miscarrying a baby and each day they test one anothers devotion, attempting to shake their habitual suffering. A voyeuristic moment with a stranger, just as they are reconnecting, brings them an unforeseeable and giddy pleasure; a healing moment of sexual and emotional re-awakening.
Act 2, Creation
Sue is that stranger, and this passing engagement is only the start of a very unusual day for her. She is a young, together woman, who after learning that she is pregnant, atypically runs out of gas. A mercurial young man on a bicycle comes to her aid, and for a fleeting moment allows Sue to greet the world with ebullience and celebrate her newfound form. Sharing the happy news with her husband, however, levels her out once again, and leaves Sue confused about the life growing inside of her.
Act 3, Self-Awareness
Young Lara is a bit forgotten at school. In a moment of insouciant cruelty, Lara gains the attention of her peers at the expense of a classmate, who also finds herself on the fringes. Later that day, while waiting for her very late mom to pick her up from school, Lara also meets the young man on his bicycle. He stumbles upon the space of Laras imagination time, a grey zone where a little girl tries to make sense of her actions, her identity, and her time. The young man offers a sweet antidote to the bitterness of life, and when her mother finally arrives, a more reflective Lara sees herself and the world anew.
