Here's an early actuality from the Pathe Brothers showing the famed Parisian park. It's not at all the calm and rural looking affair the flaneurs frequent in the movies, but am inner city park where the pavement is repaired with gravel and tar and a good-enough-for-the-apaches attitude.
The people do dress very nicely for the era, and one or two face the camera and salute it. Most of the others seem to be aware of it. Given that these actualities were staged, that's hardly surprising. The most interesting thing is that the players were unable to behave in an entirely natural fashion, as if the camera were not there.
