Any discussion about Danish documentary film "Det Forførte Menneske" is incomplete unless it is mentioned that it is not for all tastes. This is because in order to understand essential nuances of this film, a viewer has to be absolutely aware of who Danish director Jorgen Leth is, what are the films which he has made and under what circumstances. As this documentary film is about Jorgen Leth, one has to have a good idea of this apparently esoteric director and the role of philosophy in his life. This is one reason a casual viewer would not make much progress in understanding of this film unless he/she is thoroughly aware of the existentialist philosophy as espoused by Denmark's greatest philosopher Søren Kierkegaard. This film's director Truls Lie is correct in his assessment of Jorgen Leth as he conducts a question and answer session in order to reveal his protagonist as an ordinary man like you and I who is also frank, honest and relaxed. The image of Jorgen Leth as a kind person is endorsed by Chantal Regnault-a French/Haitian photographer who also happens to be one of his best women friends. Chantal's narration appears extremely important as it helps in getting an unbiased view of how Jorgen Leth is viewed in Haiti-a country where he has spent a large part of his life. Philosophy and cinema are believed to be distant cousins. However, Truls Lie brings them closer by allowing viewers to view Jorgen Leth through desire, doubt and despair-three major concepts which have primarily embodied the spirit of philosophy as vouchsafed by Søren Kierkegaard- Denmark's greatest philosopher. The cinematographic dimension of this film is promoted as we see a working director Jorgen Leth filming one of his ambitious projects in recent times about sexuality. Apart from this casual yet short venture in the world of cinema made by Jorgen Leth, scenes from other films made by him would surely appear as an added advantage for this film as one can learn more and whet the curiosity to watch more of his films.
